Canon 1D Mark IV @ 800mm f/5.6 on a tripod. Please C&C on sharpness. Still a heavy crop.

Non calibrated Camera to lens. Non calibrated monitor. Straight out of the camera except for the cropping. #2 I did change the contrast slightly because it looked better to me on my monitor. Thanks for looking and commenting. Dave

They don't look bad. By chance have you located the den. With an 800mm you should be able to really nail some shot of them if you can get in closer to the den and shoot them a lot. Use some kind of blind or something though to keep them from feeling threatened.

Otherwise, not bad shots but with that 800 and some good fieldcraft you can really nail those suckers.

Typical stuff I normally get shooting around a den with my old manual focus 800/5.6.

Hard to really tell sharpness at this size though. Something looks off to me in the last three shots though. Like the way the ears seem to stand out from the background or something.

These look acceptably sharp for unsharpened images Dave. A little sharpening would go a long way, but then, so would getting closer ~ Ron

They do look like big crops Dave. As another note, since you asked, you always have to sharpen images unless you have the camera set to do it automatically. That is just the nature of digital. The 800 is an super sharp lens with some of the best IQ out there. I think you just have to get a bit closer

jamesdak I believe the den must have been in the woods. They kept running in the woods to hide? Anyhow I didn't get to spend but an hour there. Thanks Dave

Looks like the sharpness is ok to me Dave but reduced due to the heavy drop.
Agree with the others on trying to get a bit closer and hence reducing the amount of the crop.
