p.1 #14 · p.1 #14 · Yes or no. 1D mkIII has a two stop advantage over the 1D mkIIn | |
Well, I loved the IIn and still think it is one of Canon's all time best. It was fine at ISO 800, could work okay at 1250, but you had to have the right subject and do a fair amount of NR at 1600. I'd say the 1DIII could definitely do another stop and I could under duress shoot at 3200 maybe a bit more. Always thought the 1DIII image was "colder" for want of a better term.
Found myself shooting sports in very bad light for a paycheck and got the 1DIV. I do shoot it regularly (football) at ISO 25600 wide open at f/2.8. It takes some luck and a lot of work but I can get newspaper ready images out of it. I don't think they could print any bigger than 8x10 and then only on some of them. I guess the 1Dx adds another stop, maybe a stop and a half, but $6.5K (or $5.7K if you ever catch it on Canon referb.) is a lot of cash. This local economy won't support the investment so I don't know.
Back to OP's question, my experience supports the 1DIII as definitely a stop faster and two if you have to have it and are willing to work the RAW fairly heavily. Don't know how dark or how fast your subjects are but within the 1600 to maybe 3200 the 1DIII is a solid camera.
