p.1 #1 · Cliff Swallows in Louisiana

I have not lost my mind totally YET . I know there are no cliffs in south Louisiana There are , however, bridges. It appears that during the cliff swallow migration, some will stop, build their mud cones under some bridges . After the youngsters are old enough they continue on their migration.

This is certainly a first for me . The shots are not the best. Shooting conditions kind of tough , under the spillway bridge, on a cloudy overcast day. Of course I forgot my flash and better beamer ( Morris will be very disappointed with me ). Hard to get a really good angle since there was water all around so sat in the mud and saw a sight I have never seen before ---

Cliff swallows in the below sea level Louisiana

A biologist friend confirmed the ID, as I had no idea we had them here.

As always your nits, crits and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Iso high , so lost lots of detail, but hope you enjoy anyway.

Birdie, any shots of these guys are worthwhile. It's amazing where they can nest -- how the heck do you begin building a nest in some of those places? A few years ago a big colony built nests under the eaves outside my 3rd floor office window; it was really something to see them fly in and out in huge flocks. And, since they tend to "lighten the load" before landing and takeoff, I was happy that there was glass in my window.

That was a real cliffhanger of a post Birdie. Nice job!

We also have Barn Swallows and Cave Swallows nesting under bridges and overpasses as well in LA.

They build under a bride in my area too Birdie, but the bridge is so high that I can't get shots as nice as these ~ Ron

Excellent shooting, Birdie .
I'm curious to see long-legged insects so close to the nests (#3). Swallows ARE insect eaters .
I don't think they can build their mud nests on flat surfaces, but give them a 90-degree angle and they are masters. And humans LOVE 90-degree angles when we build stuff.
The pics are a bit too large for my monitor; I have to scroll in both directions to see all parts of the images .
I'm thinking a little magic dust might work here . Whaddaya think, Birdie? .

I think you did well even without the flash and beamer, interesting how they'll find a cliff even if man has to provide one for them. Good job in searching them out.

Nice job, Birdie. Technical shortcomings are made up for by the biology; the set shows beautifully how these birds adapt to their surroundings. Plus, a cliff below sea level that is not below the sea. Only in Louisiana!
