p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Help me spend my $500 prize

I was lucky enough to win the photo contest at the local art gallery and I have a gift card to pro photo supply in Portland burning a hole in my pocket.

I am primarily a landscape photographer but also do some sports (mostly of my sons team) and the occasional wildlife. I do some back packing so light weight is an added bonus. I do print fairly large occasionally so IQ is important to me.

I currently have a D800E and my lenses are. A brand new samyang 14mm 2.8, Nikon 18-35 G, Nikon 50 mm 1.8, Nikon 85 1.8 G, a Tokina 100mm 2.8 Macro, and a 70-300 nikon vr.

I feel pretty happy with all of my lenses with the possible exception of the 70-300 which doesn't seem to fair as well with the D800e as it did with the D7000.

I could certainly chip in some money to go over $500 but of course the less the better.

The lens that first came to mind for me was the Nikon 28 1.8. At around $700 it would be the right amount. I am pretty happy with the 18-35 zoom but I have been taking a lot of star photos and the 1.8 aperture would be a big improvement for that. Other thoughts I had are saving up a bit more and thinking about the new 70-200 f4 or maybe the 300 mm f4.

Any other suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks Brian

I would wait. Save and grab a 70-200F4VR. Another great, light weight tool for landscape to add to your bag. At some point I want to grab one of these.

If don't already have one, a good tripod and ballhead will improve the IQ of all your current and future lenses. Talk about bang for the buck.

If you crave fine detail and you can go $900, the new Sigma 35mm f/1.4 cannot be beat for the money. Mind-blowing on the D800e. Perhaps the sharpest autofocus DSLR lens meets the highest-res DSLR sensor. It's a killer combo.

I second a vote for the 70-200 F4. Unless you want to just go all out at get an 80-400 for sports.

I would spend the money on a nice trip to Hawaii, take your camera and enjoy taking pictures. The British Columbia could be another choice.Travel, travel and travel.IMO

Wow thanks for all the advice. Lots of love for the 70-200. I thought about the 35mm sigma but if figured the 28 nikon would split the difference better between the 14 samyang and the 50 nikon I have. But yes I have heard such good things about it might be worth another look.

Hawaii. Yeah its a gift card. Cant travel on it.

i have a very good Feisol tripod and RRS head so I am pretty set there.

Thanks for the shot of the firing range. It looks like you are standing on the wrong side of the gun. Super detail.

Thanks for all the help so far. Brian

SB910? doesn't really sound like you 'need' a flash for your type of photography, and it wouldn't be something I would spend that much on if I didn't think I'd need it, but kind of cool to think it would basically be free and you might enjoy expanding into that realm..just a thought
