Just purchased a D7100 and was going to get a 24-70 2.8 lens. I was doing some research and came across a couple of postings that are saying don't get the 27-70 for a DX body, instead get the 17-55. I kind of understand, but not 100%. Can someone help me understand why My thought was to get the 24-70 in case I moved to full frame one day, because I understand the DX lens wont work with FF bodies??

24mm on DX is only the equivalent to 36mm. Most people want wider lenses than that at least some of the time. That is your choice if you never shoot wide. If you don't need wide apertures the 16-85 VR is a very nice walkaround lens for DX.

In any case, your title is confusing. How is a 70-200 involved?

! Thanks for the explanation. 70-200 got involved because that lens is on my mind but can afford it. Thanks for pointing that out.

Consider the f/4 or the first version of the f/2.8.

What is the "formula" for determining the different ranges? DX vs FF?

DX*1.5=FX. FX is the Nikon market name for the area covered by the old 135 film format (24x36 mm). DX is about 2/3 of that size in each dimension, ~16x24 mm.

I have a friend who paired the 24-70 with the 12-24 on a D300 and was quite happy with the combo. That said, the 17-55 is a helluva lens. Glad I'm not in your shoes.

That's what I did as well. I initially had the 17-50 but I found myself wanting either something wider or something a little longer (depending what I was shooting) so I went with 2 lenses to cover the range I want and I'm very happy in the decision I made.
