p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which lens between 24-120 F4 and 70-200 F4?

I think that I'm going to open a can of worms here.

Camera is a D7K, shooting mostly landscape, flowers, people and normal stuff when in vacation.

Money available for only one lens, sooo....

What do you guys think?

Regards

Eltano

If you don't already have something to cover your standard zoom range then definitely go for the 24-120mm if those are the only two that you're willing to consider. Why are you limiting the decision to just those two?

If you don't have a standard range zoom, I'd get that. Although probably something for a DX, 24 isn't very wide on DX

That said. . . no idea what you like to shoot. 70-200 f4 is a better quality lens would give you great telephoto range on a dx, I guess. . . .

OK, this is my lens line up:

Tokina 12-24 F4
Nikon 18-70 3.5-5.6
Nikon 17-55 2.8
Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6
Tokina 50-135 2.8
Tokina 100 2.8

I mentioned above what I like to shoot, nothing fancy.

I would look seriously at the 70-200 f4. Looks like an awesome lens and would complement your current lens line-up. BTW, all three Tokinas you have are very nice lenses.

You have a ton of lenses. Would a 24-70/24-120 replace any of these?

24-70 could replace the Nikon 18-70 with the Tokina f4 making up the 18-24mm range.
24-120 could replace the other Tokina?
Selling off some of those lenses could help finance this new get.

I'm babbling with those suggestions. Do you really need that many lenses for what you do?

Thanks MP, yeap the Tokinas are really, really good.

The reason of my question is because I'm thinking to trade the 100mm (if I can find someone willing to do the trade, since I have it for sale, but nothing so far) for any of these lens.

Neither, you have this range nicely covered. Get a macro for the flower shots.

Actually I would sell a couple of lenses The 18-70, 18-200 are quite redundant. The 17-50 2.8 is better than all of them for DX, including the 24-120. The Tokina 50-135 covers the mid tele (it's a great lens). The Tokina 100 is also a great lens for macro.

If I were you I would get a 300 AF-S, a TC 14E II and a PN-11. This will open new doors for serious macro photography in addition to sports and wildlife. A serious tripod & ballhead is another worthy investment.

Thank guys for the suggestions.

The reason that I'm keeping some of the redundant lens is because I still have my D40x that my son is using.

I'm selling the Tokina 100 because I'm not into macro as I thought originally, I tested a couple of times, and it went back to the box, still BNIB.

BTW, the Tokina 100mm 2.8 is a macro lens.

Hijazist, thanks for your idea, but as I said above, macro is not for me. I totally agree that the 50-135 is a great lens, sharp as it can be, same goes for my new toy, the 17-55.

My favorite lens for DX and FX is the 28-300.
I now have two for my cameras.
It is surprisingly good wide open at 28mm.

That said, friends that also have the 24-120 prefer it.
I think that most of your shots might be in that range.
I recently sold my D7100 and got a D800e
after discovering I am no longer in to long shots.

I guess I don't get your thinking at all.

You have the 17-55 2.8 and 50-135 2.8 -- both of great quality, probably better than 24-120, and faster. So why bother with the 24-120?

Unless it's all about VR and convenience of 1 lens... but it's not quite as wide, or long. Or fast as the other two put together. Personally I'd rather have the two lenses you have paired to take care of my needs zoom wise.

Of course, if you want a 1 lens option, you have again a better fit, likely, in the 18-200.

Derek, you are absolutely correct, it was just a thought that I have to replace the 100mm,which I dont use at all for a lens that I know will use, or my son with the D40x.

I know that the 17-55 and the 50-135 are really good, and I'm happy with them, just looking to do something with the 100, and the other option (beside selling it, which is not happening yet) was to trade it.

I appreciate all the good suggestions, time to go to sleep, at least for me.

Thanks and good night.

Well, you don't have anything really good past 135, so a good long lens would be my pick in your shoes. The 300mm somebody suggested would be quite a bit of length with a crop sensor.

That or maybe the 11-16 tokina 2.8... really love that lens, could sell off the 12-24. It'd fit right in with your 2.8 lineup.

I'd be tempted to skinny down:

Tokina 12-24 F4 - Keep or sell for Tokina 11-16 f/2.8
Nikon 18-70 3.5-5.6 - Sell
Nikon 17-55 2.8 - Keep
Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6 - Keep if you want a nice walk-around lens and/or want the reach I love mine. Sell otherwise.
Tokina 50-135 2.8 - Sell
Tokina 100 2.8 - Sell if you don't do macro.

I think a 24-120 f/4 would be the start, and put pennies away for the 70-200 later. I have the 70-200 f/4 and I love it a lot, but it isn't my most-used lens.

Also, I'm surprised you don't have a 35 f/1.8. Not a landscape lens, but great fun and not expensive.

My $0.02.

Yeah, i'd look at some of the samyang fast lenses. The 35 1.4 is a killer lens if you don't need AF. Lots you can do with it. 85 1.4 is supposed to be good too, and cheap.

Guy. I'm guessing you don't really know the Tokina 50-135. As an ex-Pentax user I know this is optically the identical lens to the Pentax 50-135/2.8. A superb lens in almost every regard (AF a touch slow but the Tokina uses a different AF system). Personally I wouldn't be selling the 50-135 whilst using APS-C.

I think the 24-120 is a poor choice on crop. 24mm isn't wide enough for walkaround - on DX you really need something starting at 17 or 18mm. The 17-55mm does this job much better, and you already own it

If you insist on yet another zoom, the 70-200 is a better choice, and will be sharper than your only other 200mm option (the 18-200)

However you own a lot of zooms already, with quite a bit of overlap

My preference would be a fast prime lens, such as the 35mm 1.8, the 50mm 1.8 or the 85mm 1.8
- primes are invaluable in low light, and allow creative use of shallow depth of field etc.
