p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Dahlia dahlia !!!

Few months back, my wife took home a bunch of bulbs. Dahlia! I didn't even know how the flowers would look like. But the name was beautiful, just like a beautiful girl should be named.
So I just dig some holes and there the bulbs sank!
Needless to say, I have been amazed buy the beauty of these flowers. They come in different colors and shapes. Amazing. For quite some time, I didn't dare to take picture being afraid I would fail their beauty!
Well today finally I gave it a try.
Please feel free to comment. I want to learn to live up to the beauty of these flowers: Dahlia, what a beautiful name, what a beautiful flower>

Looks good. I prefer #1. I suggest you add a little vignetting to darken the border in #2.

Thanks Harsha,
That is a good idea. I will try to reshoot with different angles.

Lovely flowers, indeed, Bob!

I would also try shooting these from a greater distance with your longest telephoto at wide aperture to isolate the beautiful blooms from a distracting background. These lovelies present many nice photo ops.

Thanks, Chaz, that is a great idea. This is a tight quarter, I think I can try.

Bob,

I take lots of flower shots. I have to admit... I'm feeling twinges of a green eyed monster right this second. Your first shot is stupendous! So sharp and clear, to me the depth of field is perfect.

What lens did you use?

I've recently purchased a Canon 100mm macro and it has been doing well, but I can't say I've gotten the 'thrill' out of anything I've shot with it like I have seeing this shot of yours.

Hi Paz,
Great to see you around again. Your Canon lens should do even better. I used a Nikon zoom 2-120 f4.
BTW, have you bought a marble Buddha yet?

2 - 120? I don't think I've ever heard of less than a 12 or 14 or so.

>>should do better.

Nope. Maybe I don't know how to use it!

This lens is a bit heavy for me. I have another with vibration compensation that I find myself going back to. I'm beginning to wonder if the lens is not auto focusing perfectly. ( Back focusing? Maybe that's the term. I think there's some way to test for it.)

Here's an example. Pretty, but definitely soft compared to your shots.

http://www.patriceart.com/fm_003/jubilee_celebration_7241.jpg

ISO 200, f/16, 1/60 second

I might have done better at f/8. Or a higher ISO. Either one would have given me a shorter shutter speed. I've done some practice shots at f/32. Not a one in focus. Maybe f/32 is for 'tripod only.'

Come to think of it, I have gotten some super sharp macro shots and they were all with high ISO. I think I'll experiment with a variety of settings and see what I get.

No marble anything. We put up a sort of tent with table and chairs and often have lunch there, beside the rose garden. I don't think I'll ever want to give up the shade!

Obviously your garden is doing well. Please tell your wife her flower choices are great!

Paz, Sorry for the typo. It is 24-120 f4.
You notice that all of my pix were taken at f 8 ot even f5.6, f4.
And I think it is the light. Photography in natural light is quite tricky. So far the only time of the day that would give me good images is early morning.
In case you miss it, this is the second serie of the Dahlia:

The Dahlia. One of my favorite subjects! You got some nice detail in that first one and great color. As suggested, more isolation by shooting with a wider aperture, but still very pleasing to view.....
