Will a TC-20E III work with a Nikkor 300 mm 4.5 from 1984?

Only if you modify the TC to remove the small tab on the mount as in here:

If you are not handy with fine tools do not attempt it yourself.

If it is in fact a 1984 version then according to here:

http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html#300

It's the ED-IF version which does not have an element near the rear mount.

It is an AIS lens. Serial #556xxx. Will it work?

If you are not confident filing off the tab yourself then ask someone who repairs cameras to do it for you - it took the guy I asked 5 mins and he refused to accept payment ! It does not affect the TC in any other way and it will continue to work perfectly with all your other compatible lenses.

be sure to go over that TC with a magnet and vacuum
or at least a magnifying glass.
You sure don't want any filings in your camera.

Well, the proper way is to take off the mounting ring to file off the tab - I wouldn't dream of trying to do it while it is still attached to the TC body . . .
