I am contemplating purchasing this lens. I shoot with a Nikon D5100 that does not have a built in motor. I know I want to upgrade within the next year, hopefully, but for now I would like a reliable every day lens that would focus quickly. I purchased an older 50mm that I have to manually focus, which I don't mind for the most part, but I noticed that it does take much more time than with lenses that focus automatically, even though I'm quite good at this point.

My question is whether this lens is worth the purchase. It is half the price of an older manual lens that I could use on a DX and would auto focus for those every day shots on the street. Does anyone have any prior experience with this glass? I want something wider for my DX and an autofocus seems useful now that I have gone without it for so long.

If I had a D5100, this is the first lens I would consider buying!

The typo in the title made me laugh, I thought I was going to see a terrible review of the lens, or something.

I have this lens. I like it its a great walk-around lens. I don't use it as much as I used to since I bought my 17-55 F2.8 but I'm sure not gonna sell it.. Go get it, you won't regret it..

Op, if you can stretch your budget a little higher...take a look at the 28 1.8G. A better focal length on DX, better built and optics is superior than the 35 1.8G.

This is the first lens that I recommend for anyone wanting to try out a prime on DX. You absolutely can not beat this lens for the price.

I highly recommend that you stop thinking about it, and just go buy it. It's that good.

This was the primary lens on my DX camera before I moved to FX. You absolutely cannot beat the optical quality for the price!

HAHAHA!!! This is precisely why I clicked the link. I vote that we adopt this particular typo in all instances where an AF-S lens can be described negatively.

That's funny right there!

The 35mm f/1.8G is $196.95
The 28mm f/1.8G is $699.00

3.5x the original budget.

"...a little higher"
I think you mean TRIPLE your budget...
Of course there's always something better!

In all seriousness, the 35mm f/1.8G is one of the best lenses you can get for the money for a DX camera. How can you beat that? Oh, I know... Buy it and the 50mm f/1.8G also! Both stellar.

It's fast, light and sharp. If you are staying with DX, it's a great lens to have.

Fast, lightweight, sharp, and fast focusing in my experience with it.

I also enjoy using it on my D700 (FX) as well - it vignettes a little bit (obviously, as it's not designed for FX), but for people shots at wide-open aperture, that's OK with me!

I recommend it. For the price, I can't think of a better, more useful general purpose lens for DX.

I will contribute a dissenting voice. I had one and liked it except for the barrel distortion. You won't notice it in many photos, but on anything with horizontal or vertical lens it is annoying.

I sold mine and bought the slightly more expensive 40mm f/2.8 micro. It may be even be a tad sharper than the 35/1.8, has no geometric distortion, will focus to 1:1, and is just about as small and light.

I had it on my D90 95% of the time. It's fabulous lens to have. Quite sharp in my opinion.

It's a great lens and worth having, even if you don't plan on staying on DX forever. FWIW, the 28/1.8 is a nice lens, but not nearly the bang for the buck on DX that the 35/1.8 is. All of the f/1.8G primes are great lenses. Now if only Nikon would ever get off of there rear and build a fast 18 and 24 for DX... probably will never happen.

it's an awesome lens...it was actually sharper in the center on FX than my 35 f/2.....really a sweet lens....

funny story, i was in Best Buy one day, and the dude in front of me in line was buying an AF-S 50mm f1.8....so we get to talking, he says he's just getting into photography, shooting with a DX body, and his pro photographer brother in law says to buy a 50mm lens...i'm like "is your brother in law shooting with full frame bodies?" he's like yeah....i'm like well you should be buying the 35mm 1.8 then....it works out to be a 50mm for you....he's like "no, he said the first lens i get should be a 50mm lens...." i'm like bro, TRUST ME, buy the 35!!

he bought the 50. lol

I bought the 35 AF-S for my D300. Tested it against the 35 f/2 and sold the f/2. Bought a D700 but kept the D300 as a second camera(sold the previous second camera, a D200). Sold off practically all my DX lenses but the thought never even crossed my mind about selling the 35 AF-S.
I'm still in the market for a 35mm for my D700, but the 35mm AF-S isn't going anywhere as long as I still have a DX camera. Great lens. Sharp, fast, contrasty.
Go for it. Best bang for your buck.

(In my opinion) the 35/ 1.8 is a no-brainer. The 30 mm/ 1.4 from Sigma would be my next choice, but it used to be at least double the price of the 35 and the new version will be at least as much. I bought the Sigma, but the 35 wasn't out yet.

I use on on a D700 all the time. Along with Canon's 40mm f/2.8 pancake, this is one of the best lens values out there.
