Was able to see my first rattler of the year after I'd passed over him this morning on the way to the job site. About 3 feet long, and was pretty content to just lay in the road, but did manage to coil for me after a bit. All CC welcomed.

#1 is really very good with the tongue extended. Good to see snake shots.

Great rattlesnake shot! Prairie Rattlesnake

Like the first one the best, at eye level and getting the tongue at mid flicker is a big plus.

Hi Dave,

So he is not a diamondback then? Shows how little I know. Thanks for the corrected info.

Two terrific takes, Terry.
I like the shadow of this beauty's head in the second image, but there are more things going on in the first- so that's my favorite shot.

Great rattlesnake shots!

They are the ones you don't plan for! You have to have the camera with you.

Thanks for all the comments folks. I kept about 6 feet between he and I for the majority of our 15 minute escapade. He was just minding his own business, warming up on the dirt road… then I came along and ruined his siesta (better me than a rancher, as they prefer to run snakes over).

5 minutes after my arrival he made an attempt to vacate, but I'd step in front of him to reposition my camera (he was facing west). After a few minutes of this kind of dance, he decided to coil and stand his ground (now facing into the sun). Another five minutes and he backed down and headed to the bushes. I'd gotten what I was after and did not try to cut him off.

Both shots are nice Terry, I've never noticed the blue tongue before. Is that common? ~ Ron

Hi Ron,

I only see a couple snake a year, so don't know much about them. The blue towards the top in each photo is a reflection from the sky. I suppose I could alter that a bit.

RichFisher,

Closer is better eh? The snake was pretty docile, so the distance never felt unsafe. Rattlers are not very fast when not striking. When coiled, one this size can only strike a couple of feet.. The distance did seem short when viewing the critter via 400mm lens, that was a bit spooky.

Wow, I don't know if I'd do a dance like that, but great shots nonetheless!

Great work.

Several years ago I was taking a morning walk along a dirt road a few miles from this location. At one point I turned around (walking backwards now) to view the scene behind me. I probably walked 40 or 50 feet in this manner then stopped for a minute. When I reversed direction and faced forwards, a 5 foot rattler was basking in the suns warmth, perpendicular, across the road, a short 3 inches from my toes. I slowly backed up. He didn't move. It seems they get real calm when sunning. This event taught me a lot about the "real" nature of snakes, vs the Hollywood scripts.

The snake in this thread surprised me in that I drove over him at 30 mph (straddled), and he did not move or coil. I would have thought he'd freak out after being run over by a monster, like an SUV.
