Two reasons I love the D800E

p.1 #1 · Two reasons I love the D800E

Took the family on a 5 day, 72 mile rafting trip on the Yampa here in Colorado and brought the wife's new Panasonic DMC-TS4 for shots on the river, but also packed the D800E for morning and evening casual shots. One AM I got up, plunked the 14-24 on and took this shot just as the run was popping over the canyon rim.

The JPG doesn't do it justice - the dynamic range in the RAW gives detail from the cliff face (about 800 feet tall) down to the shadows in front of the bushes on the right side of the image. It's bloody awesome to work with.

But just as cool is the detail. Here's a 100% crop showing my boys getting some hot chocolate.

Absolutely amazing camera and lens.

Peace,

Todd

Great shot. I love the 14-24 on the D800E. Lots of detail for sure.

Nice and crispy shot. After owned this lens for many years , this 14-24G still amazes me through a number of bodies: 5DmkII (originally which I bought it for) , D700, 5DmkIII and specially it's on my D800. Never leave it home every time I went out with the FF camera.

pretty hard core to take a that kind of gear on a five day raft trip...I'm impressed, can't say I would have though but I'm sure every time you pulled it out you were glad it was there

Great camera for almost any use. Love it with the 35/1.4G.

And one with the 70-200 VR2

Another great reason. Check out this ISO 400 crop, with the 35/1.4G at f/2.4.

Beautiful shot, Todd! Looks like an HDR! Were you shooting with a tripod? Also, care to share your shot settings? Peace back!

Hi Randal,

Thanks! No HDR, and yes, I was on a tripod. D800E, 14-24 lens at 20mm, F11, ISO 100, shutter @ 1/50th. Easy shot, only hard thing was getting there! And an extra special to you - Kabul must be a fascinating place to be.

Thanks Todd!

The detail in those foreground rocks and in the sunny cliff face are really something!

Kabul IS a very interesting place - but as a photographer - it is a heart-breaker!

Every day I see 100 images I would love to capture - but I can't stop or exit the vehicle - too dangerous...
