Kind of hard to choose between...

Swivel high res screen with smaller size and newer image processor

OR

Smaller screen with an EVF and possibly better grip.

I do really, really like swivel screens and use it more than an EVF most of the time. However, when you need an EVF when shooting outdoors, it's a life saver.

There's also that you can get the new 16-50 for only $100 more with the new body... Hrm..

I think the Fuji line-up is becoming really awesome:

- The X20 compact (probably only the Sony RX-100 is better)
- This new X-M1 looks really good. Personally I love the images from my X-E1: I think the X-trans sensor is very good. Would have loved a better swivel screen, but I still prefer an EVF/OVF (that's why I don't have the Sony RX100).
- You just gotta love the X100/X100S (I have the older 100)
- The X-E1 and 18-55 is awesome, as is probably the X-1Pro
- The Fuji lenses are great and the roadmap looks fine to me: much better than e.g. Sony's.

Now, do we have a NEX alternative or even killer here? Personally I think the Sony sensor is great, their user interface not so much and the lens line up....ouch.

And - Fuji might indeed be the new Leica. We will have to see decent reviews and good sample images from both the Fuji X-M1 (esp. the new zoom) and the Leica Vario X. So far the initial Leica reviews seem to me "bend over backward" to justify the camera. If you love Leica for it's build quality (not the re-branded Panasonics) and their "historical heritage", just say so: I can understand that, and because of that I actually want Leica to succeed. Wish they wouldn't call an under-specced camera a Mini-M.... they just make themselves ridiculous compared to Fuji.

The new 16-50 kit lens looks Decent. That and the new pancake are made in China now.

Surprisingly good "pop" for a kit lens: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25805910@N05/9146959002/in/set-72157634347959980/

Hi,

I became a bit curious myself about this new camera, the X-M1. Actually,
I was a bit sad to have realized that the the recent rebates on XF lenses
had finished. For the price of the lens, it seems a good buy. Please look
below the following two pictures. The first one, made with the 27 mm.
pancake. The second one, made with the 16-50 zoom. The amazing thing
is, that the zoom picture looks quite good compared to the one made with
the pancake. One may not think that the zoom costs only $100 As you
will notice, the pictures are provided in cooperation with Fuji. I find the set
of pictures to be very nice. However, I would love to see some street and/or
documentary photography made with this camera. I wonder if among the
film simulation modes, is also neopan included.

Picture 1, with 27 mm. pancake:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/25805910@N05/9146933352/in/set-72157634347959980/

Picture 2, with 16-50 mm. zoom:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/25805910@N05/9144710143/in/set-72157634347959980/

So, my question: really, how bad are the optics of this new XC zoom,
compared to the optics of the other XF lenses ??

Thank you, very kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

I dont know, to me those FujiX's aer all about the viewfinders, the manual controls and the lenses.
If you're not gonna have 2 out of 3 of these things, why no get a Canon M + pancake for $300 instead?

Maybe they want a 35mm f/1.4 lens cheaper than Canon's? Maybe the same with a 14mm lens? Does Canon even make an 18mm f/2 prime?

There are loads of reasons to choose Fuji over Canon. How about Fuji's color?

Photoraphyblog reviewed both camera and lens.

I'm going to go check them out this week at B&H.

Reports indicate the the new lens is good on the wide end, weaker on the long end... just like I was hoping for. Sharpness seems great and so is CA resistance.

I really want the silver/brown combo but I think all the lenses are black so it might not make any sense to get a silver body.

I'm really hoping to score a 16-50 on the cheap from a split kit in a month or two (once they are readily available). I don't want to pay $400 for one, but if I can get one split out of a kit for $250 or so, I'm in. The images I've seen out of it are excellent (even at 50mm).

I'm not a fan of Photographyblog's reviews. First, they drive me crazy by posting their sample images saying they are taken at their 35mm equivalent rather than the true focal length. It perpetuates all sorts of misinformation about crop factor and drives me nuts. (Look at their review for the Panny 35-100...and you see all sorts of image samples from 70mm to 200mm...how confusing, especially when you first click on one that says 70mm). Second, their 'sharpness tests' consist of taking pictures of book spines. That's fine...I do it myself when testing sharpness. But I at least make sure to make all the books level so you can actually have everything in the focus plane. Them? Nope...you just have to guess and assume what's in the focal plane and what's not. Finally, their sample images are horrible..it'd be nice if a popular blog dedicated to photography actually had a decent photographer that worked for them. How they generate as much traffic as they do or became a partner to get pre-release versions of equipment is beyond me. Sorry for the rant....

I just skim their reviews. I don't think they're as bad as TechRadar who still post their ridiculous and completely false graphs from poor use of DXOMark.

The only reviews I read carefully are from LL (inconsistent quality) and Ming Thein (gorgeous sample images and a real photogs' take).

Every other review site I either just skim or just don't take seriously. It's hard for me to take a blog photographer's review opinion seriously when I see their images are lacking which tells me they really don't know much about photography.

I'm a bit dissapointed the X-M1 doesn't have a touch screen. Touch AF points are so key to my experience.

I guess Fuji will have to edit their marketing literature, to remove the references to "Made in Japan Quality" now...

Ouch. (Goes and tries to be a better photog so FPF reads my reviews).

So I broke down and ordered the X-M1 kit...it'll be here Monday. I'll use the body enough to do a review, then will sell that and keep the lens (provided its good). That way ill get the lens for about $175-$200.

Any reason you are so hot to trot on the 16-50 vs the 18-55? Size?

They're almost identical in size. The 16-50 weighs a few ounces less, though. Looks like a nice enough lens, but I already have an 18-55.

Cost and the extra wide end. I don't use a standard zoom much, especially one that starts at 28mm equiv. This, starting at 24mm equiv and costing me 1/4 the cost of the 18-55 is a much better prospect for a lens I will only use here and there.

I found a used XM-1, and am going to have to find another home for it. I didn't think the lack of viewfinder would be a deal breaker, but it was tough to get used to shooting at arm's length.

Pair it with the 18/2 and a 28mm CV Finder and it works pretty well.
