Thanks for the input. I've checked out the Tamron at the local store. I guess they have really stepped it up over the past 10 years because that's the last time I saw/held one. It felt nothing like this 70-300 VC though. I'm considering it, which previously wouldn't have without the input here, so thanks.
Here's a little more information.
I mostly shoot from a tripod.
The zoom would be handy for zooming out to get landscapes.
Manual focus is OK, AF would be nice.
I was really disappointed on my trip down into the Ahtna regioin in Alaska last weekend. I came across a herd of Bison along the Alskan Range that was just an epic sight. Perfect light, snowy mountain backdrop, brilliant summer weather and colors in the valley etc. I also saw about 20 moose throughout as well as a bear and the supermoon at dusk with a sunset backdrop.
However, I sold my D7000 and ordered a D600 last week. So I had no camera and missed all those shots on the way to spend the weekend salmon fishing on the Klahtina. My new camera should be here Thursday but I still have to decide on a new lens by this Friday when I go back down. As I said all I have currently is the Samynag 14mm 2.8 which is perfect for landscapes. Are there no Sigma's that fit the bill? I've always preferred them over Tamron and have had good luck in the past with their 50mm.
