Rework 5... magenta tones ruin it for me.

On a scale of 1-20, I'd give this much more than 15, Chuck.

RE: "dont ever post another color photo again" (and other variations)

I really dont know how to take these comments anymore. At first it got me a , but I think this is the 50th time that Doug posted almost identical comments and none of them have changed how I present images (and none of the future comments of the like will change). It's at the point now where it almost feels insulting...or its a backhanded compliment (and I know Doug and dont think that it's either). I'm not sure if it means that my BW work is so good and my color work sucks? Or that my BW work is good and my color work is not up to par (as others have mentioned to me)? Or Doug treats my BW work like porn and reaches for a tube sock to catch his man juice when I post all BW sets?

But these types of comments arent really critiques or feedback that can help me develop as a photographer. For example, Alan gave great feedback "Rework 5... magenta tones ruin it for me." That is specific and something to work on and validates why I continue to post. But the other comments leave me scratching my head and are getting old (unless they have a point).

For what it's worth, I'm pretty happy with the color in this set (although I havent gone to look at Alan's suggestion yet).

I think your style is changing. Changing focal lengths/lenses can do that.

Really? How so?

This wedding was shot with a 24/35/85...same lenses I've used for the past 6 years.

EDIT: Only 4 of the 15 posted here were shot with the 85.

2, 15.

14 feels a bit "heavy" in processing to me. The whole flooding-everywhere-with-light thing that's going on in the reception doesn't really do it for me, but the moments are certainly nice.

I agree with Joey - your style does seem to be changing. I think it's a bit more clean and your showing more of your telephoto shots than you used to. It all looks great, although I think that your style from about a year ago was more unique. Not that you should just stick to doing the same thing over and over again; it's nice to see different stuff (ex: color, telephoto), and I'm interested to see where you take it.

Perhaps you are just posting different photos from the norm? As compared to before, I don't know that any of the images you posted here were 24mm...which I suppose I have come to expect from you. Something about the storytelling nature of your photos I've seen recently has become more focused and less complex? Your reception light also seems...brighter. I suppose I have also come to expect more dark tones/shadows from you than I'm seeing in some recent sets like this one.

Thanks for the detailed feedback, Mike! I always appreciate you checking in. In fact it was a comment you made probably over a year ago that made me examine my work a bit closer. You wrote something to the effect "I'd like to see more PJ telephoto work from you." That made a lot of sense to me...you were right. I dont think I'm necessarily showing more telework (ie, there are only 4 of 15 that were shot at 85mm in this set) but I am working on mixing it into my day a bit more often.

Regarding the lighting of the reception....we didnt use a single flash all day long

Thanks Joey. I appreciate you taking the time and value your thoughts (sincerely). I think 1 and 3 were at 24mm. I dont know that I can disagree with you regarding my shots being less complex. For me, thats the most frustrating thing about shooting primarily documentary. It is hard for me to duplicate from week to week. Sometimes I see well, sometimes I dont...sometimes the moments are there, sometimes I miss them. But I dont think my approach to the day has changed. I actually went back to my first 5 wedding sets that I second shot (2009) and they are very similar in nature to this set. As Mike mentioned, I think some things are cleaner and more refined. But the approach has been the same.

Regarding the reception lighting of this one...no flash was used all day

In all seriousness Chuck (and sorry about saying the same thing over and over) I think your BW stuff is probably the best around and I personally feel like you could carve a huge niche for yourself by just doing BW ... or at least just showing BW photos. I almost feel like you are wasting some of your potential as a photographer because you show color. Now that is just personal opinion but when you have the stuff you have the stuff.

I know you will most likely never go all BW but you can be damn well sure that as your friend and someone who respects your work I will be telling you all the time that is exactly what you should do. IMO you are setup perfectly to do it. You do not really have to worry about doing photography full time. You are working "under" Tony and you have a fully developed skill set that does not really need to much honing in any one particular place.
I suppose it is just my teacher side talking!

FWIW the color shots in this set are really nice. I particularly like 14. The greatest accomplishment that a photographer can achieve IMO is to have people recognize their work without their name attached. When I see your color photos I do not immediately think "Anerino". It would be like Salvador Dali painting a still life or portrait. It most likely would be good just not recognizable.

I have no desire to insult you what so ever. My greatest critique in the end will simply be that you should have been a pure BW photographer. I am also somewhat jealous that you have that potential.

Anyway. It also pains me to say that I think the 24-70 will suite your shooting style quite well. I really hate zoom lenses and I hate the 24-70 varieties even more but it should do you well.

There are few photographers that can accomplish this, and I agree that Chuck is one of them.

Chuck, the whole set is well done, but I agree that your B&W work is stronger. 1, 2 & 3 are my favorite of the set. I'm constantly blown away that you are still fairly "new" to shooting weddings and are able to produce the work that you do.

If you're anything like me your style will go through cycles. I get bored of shooting the same way all of the time and I tend to switch it up every few months.

I agree. Your B&W images and the 'feel' your conversions give them really sets you apart from so many others. It's almost as if your color images were shot by someone else. That's how much if an impact your B&W have on the average viewer. Then again we're photographers, which means you probably shouldn't give a rat's ass what we think and just shoot for the client...

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys! Without question, I feel my BW work is stronger. Not really sure what to do about that Al, I dont really care, but I respect the opinions of my peers (unless they are wrong, of course )
