If the alleged D400, is built with a full alloy frame and has the same control layout as the D300 - D700 and throws in a higher clean ISO with some more pixels, I will be first in line to buy a good used one in a couple of years.

And that is probably why Nikon isn't turning on the after burners to get this camera to market. The used market doesn't do them any good. They need customers breaking down the door to buy a NEW camera. I'm afraid Mike that you're part of the problem, not the solution...

I have no interest in a DX camera but I'm really enjoying this thread. I wish you folks well. I'll be in line for the real replacement of the D700, a camera that won't have 36 megapixels...

All kidding aside, no I would not, but then again, I don't NEED my D300 but I want it, like it, use it and enjoy it.

What is important to me though is that Nikon gives clear signs of continuing to support a pro-level DX line-up.

I actually laughed out loud because I am the biggest consumer I know - so yeah I would probably buy a D500 in two years.

I have to think Nikon is planning on a real D300s replacement for 2 reasons,
1. the D600 although a more affordable full frame, does not have what it takes for sports shooters, especially with the 39 point center cluster of AF points.
2. The D7100 is great, but, it is missing some key points - 6 fps isn't enough for a lot of sports and wildlife shoots, and the buffer is just silly. I mean I understand keeping it tamed down so they have room to improve the the real D400, but a 1 second burst. lmao at how ridiculous that decision was - plus, sitting here holding it next to my D700 it is quite obviously not a pro build. Im not saying it isn't built well, and being lite is a good thing, but with no quick af control switch, and the lack of a top of the dial ISO button it just isn't on the same level.

Nikon would be making a big mistake if at some point very soon they did not update the D300s IMO

Actually, the D7100 switch is the new AF control switch... same as the D800.

Until very recently I was a DX user only, D80 to 90 to 7000 to D7100. Love the D7100, great camera. About a month ago I took the plunge and got a D4, and have used it a few times. A few weeks ago I shot an airshow with it. This last Sunday I went to another airshow and took both bodies. I used the D7100 first. During the first pass by a fast airplane it filled up the buffer and slowed down so fast I initially thought something had broken. Then it hit me, I was already used to the D4 buffer. Yeah, the D7100 buffer is broken, broken by design. There will be a D400, and I'll definitely get one and use it alongside the D4.

You have a way with words ... this is a perfect example of why a D400 is needed so badly.

For me the equation is quite simple. If there is no D400 that I can buy new by the end of the year IŽll buy a used D3 at that stage and forget about DX. That includes buying an off brand 1.4x tele converter because my pro Nikon lenses donŽt work well with the Nikon tele converters.

As a Canon user with a 5DII who has rented a D600, I want Nikon to do the following:

Release a camera with the robust body/build quality/layout of a D700 but with the more compact size and sensor of the D600; a shutter mechanism that doesn't spray the sensor with dust/oil would be nice too! Then give it all the latest bells, whistles, and tweaks. If this is what the D400 is to be, then make it! I may switch to the dark side!

I still maintain that Nikon uses better sensors with better DR and metering BUT I also feel that Canon offers better build quality, fit and finish, service, support, and even better glass for the most part. I am loving my EF 24-70 2.8L II. I love my 135L. About the only Nikon lens that makes me jealous is the new 85 1.8G that is an improvement over the aging Canon 85 1.8.

I suspect most on this forum would disagree ... from what I have personally seen Nikon has better build and ergonomics ... and service from both companies is pretty shitty at the momemnt.

As for the discussion at hand, the D400 is to be a DX body, not another FX body ... a pro-level DX body is the whole point of this thread.

You should compare the D600 with the 6D and the D800(E) with the 5D MKIII. Apples with apples, oranges with oranges

No one has ever been able to accuse me of being a "solution".

You live in the land of free spirits Mike, so you're likely in good company. As a person who has only rarely bought a new piece of camera gear, I'm in your camp but I couldn't resist poking a bit of fun at you...

I'll believe it when I see the D400 on sale at b&h and Adorama with an IN STOCK next to it and a price!

I think the D600 marks the grave for the DX dx00 cameras because Nikon would run into numbering issues. Case close.

Doing a little forum sleuthing I see the first D400 thread surfaced in December 2008... So, I say this D400 has been obsolete for several years. I hope it sells at a discount!

I have little faith to see a D400 in future. If Nikon will produce it definitely will have the label D9000.

But there is a clear trend in Nikon lineup.

Some generation ago, it was a professional grade DX body: in the D2 series.

Next generation the professional grade was FX, in D3 series. DX flagship was a semi-pro body D300. It was a clear downgrade in build quality from D2X to D300...

In the current generation of D4, the DX flagship seems to be D7100, which is not a semi-pro, maybe an advanced enthusiast grade. This is a clear direction of the progression (or regression)

I'm sure that some DX shooters were unhappy when Nikon downgraded its DX lineup from D2X to D300... but this did not changed Nikon plans. Crying out for a D400 will not stop them going on the path they consider normally. For them D7100 is enough for this generation. Maybe in the next generation of D5, DX flagship will be in the D5XXX class.

I personally have bigger faith that instead of a D300 upgrade Nikon will launch a real D700 upgrade. A camera that would be perfect for wedding and event photographers that are not able or willing to pay the big $$$ for D4. With better buffer and speed, this D700 upgrade will also collect most of those crying after D400. At this time Nikon seems to like "crop in camera" mode... and maybe they will improve this a little bit in future.

Guys, the DX market is MUCH bigger than the FX market. There is absolutely a need for a pro or semi-pro DX camera. The D400 will come.....
