Buffer upgrades! That would be sweet! .

Last time Nikon offered a buffer upgrade it was for the D2X.
I think it was $500

But I agree, that if the D400 comes out without a substantial buffer, it will be a huge mistake.

AFAIK the D3 was the last one with a buffer upgrade.
With the D3s the buffer was large enough.

Buffer upgrade is nice but the buffer should be large enough in the first place.

and this is where the D7100 falls short. a boilerplate D7000 (a real success as far as cameras go) idea with off the shelf parts upgrade. relatively minor existing tech parts thrown together but w/o any real thought for potential overall performance breathing.

The Nikon D300 was announced in August 2007, and the D300S update with video recording was announced in July 2009.
Now 6 years and 4 years later respectively, the "D400" still hasn't been announced.
In the digital era with its fast pace of development this is a quite unusual amount of time between a new model and its predecessor.

I for one am glad that there really hasn't been a need to unnecessarily upgrade at each and every turn. I can recall shelling out over $3,000 for a new D1H then 18 months later the street value was less than the cost to replace the shutter .... so getting 4-6 years of heavy use out of a solidly built DSLR is a bonus ... not a negative issue ... perhaps we haven't seen a replacement for the D300 yet is it is still selling rather well ... considering it is the Old Dog in the kennel. Not to mention a well cared for D300 still commands a reasonable selling price considering it's time in the market.

Again, I'm very happy that the constant, endless 12-18 month update cycle is over for such cameras ...

this has little to do with quality. it has to do with the power of marketing and the weakness of the consumer. its all about the money and how to easily part it from you.

Thom Hogan has released his D7100 review:

His one major complaint ... the buffer!

With the way techonology is (NAND flash, ect.) buffers shouldn't be an issue anymore.

thus the designation D7100 or in the computing world v7.1, just an interim sorta upgrade to keep a line going in a price point w/o damaging/crossing other existing or potentials. hobbled.

Limiting buffer capacity is a marketing decision. DDR is cheap, as is the ability to sustain higher flash throughput on the I/O interface.

Thanks, if previously posted, I missed it.

This is very positive speculation, with 1080P at 60fps., Expeed 4, a larger buffer, and new 51 pt AF.

I thought I was done with DX but this could be something to get excited about.

Hmm.... that's the writer's opinion and thus another speculation. Q1 2014? Crikeys.... that's a long wait.

I don't understand why would Nikon want to wait for Canon's 7d2 announcements. Who cares. Announce now. Sell now. Get a head start in sales. Start work on D500! Based on the DX Dx00 cycle, the D500 should be due next year danggit! Ugh, maybe Nikon should just skip D400 and jump to D500 instead.

+1 ... though I would like to see a D400 now and a D500 in 2 years instead of 4 to 6.

I think they put a lot of thought into it, that is why the gave it the crappy buffer. They knew people would buy it anyway and if they gave it a good buffer no one would need the d400. They left themselves room for improvements in a D400 while making money in the meantime. Its what companies do - just look at the computer industry, realising a new faster processors every year for the last 20 years = money.

If the D400 does come out - with say a 4 second buffer, 24 megs, wi-fi, 7-8 frames per second, expeed4, and the ability to shoot usably at ISO 6400 - would you really need a D500 in two years?

All kidding aside, no I would not, but then again, I don't NEED my D300 but I want it, like it, use it and enjoy it.

What is important to me though is that Nikon gives clear signs of continuing to support a pro-level DX line-up.

If the alleged D400, is built with a full alloy frame and has the same control layout as the D300 - D700 and throws in a higher clean ISO with some more pixels, I will be first in line to buy a good used one in a couple of years.
