I too, am impatiently awaiting the d400. I don't pretend to know whether or not there will be one or what Nikon is doing or will do and why. I do know that I'd buy a true upgrade to the d300's that I have now.

For me, I'd be very happy with a tweaked 16mp sensor out of the d7k, stuffed into a d800 body, with all of the high performance features of the d300/s. But, I suppose that a 20 to 24mp sensor would be what the bean counters would put into it. I don't care about that, all that much, so long as it can do 8fps with a very deep buffer. Ergos, buffer and FPS are important to me, otherwise I'd buy a d7100.

So, like many, I am hopeful that Mr. Hogan gets this prediction correct, JIT for football season.

Andre, keep the faith, you're not alone!

I currently shoot both Canon and Nikon (5D3 and D800e mainly). I used to own a 7D for critters but never liked the IQ and sold it to try out a D800e. Love the D800e's IQ but dang, I need a good critter cam. By "critter cam" I mean 8-10 fps, crop 16-24 MP sensor with IQ similar to the D800, large buffer, great AF and some amount of weather proofing. I'm fortunate in that I can choose between a 7D2 or D400 if they are introduced but I'd expect a D400 to have a much better sensor than a 7D2 (unless Canon really gets its act together). So, I'm in the "I certainly hope, but have no idea if, Nikon will release a D400" otherwise, depending the sensor in the 7D2, I may have to go with Canon even tho I feel myself moving away from them and towards Nikon the more I use the D800e.

As for whether either of the companies will release a 7D2 or D400, I don't know enough about Nikon to venture a guess as to their plans but I'd be shocked if Canon doesn't introduce a 7D2.

Here's hoping for a D400.....

Cheers!

Personally, I would rather see an updated version of the D2x that I have been using for 6 years. Fully professional, rugged, weather-sealed body and superb battery life with all the benefits of DX for sports and wildlife. But that is highly unlikely. As far as the D400, the release of this new semi-pro bodied DX camera would be great news for many serious shooters and pros. However Nikon needs to create some fast new pro-level DX primes and zooms to make such a system truly useful. The current choice of fast DX lenses is limited. The only fast pro-level Nikon DX zoom is the 17-55 f2.8. I agree with Thom Hogan in this regard. Where are the fast new DX lenses Nikon? Right now almost all of the choices for Nikon DX are slower consumer-level glass. As far as Nikon glass, if you need high end, FX lenses are the only real choice. Not that consumer-level DX lenses aren't serviceable. They just aren't the most desirable solution for many photographers.

Thanks Kerry,

What I find interesting is the for a company that itterates it's cameras so often, why would Nikon not itterate one of their most successful bodies they ever made, the D300?

Cheers,
Andre

I don't know, Andre. Their position on this camera has never made sense to me. I've always believed that they could have sold a ton of them with the 16mp sensor of the d7k and never understood why they brought out the S model instead of a 16mp camera.

I guess that I can understand why they didn't do a followup to the d700. Had the d600 sensor been in a full featured d800 body with 8fps, the bottom would have fallen out of the d4 and d800 markets. But, that doesn't apply to the d300 replacement.

Whatever the reason(s), the fact remains that they're leaving money in the pockets of frustrated users.

I have a suspicion that when you look at overall sales of digital cameras in general, point and shoot specifically (these new smartphones are killing the P&S market) there may not be the same amount of spare cash for R&D investment that was around most of the past decade ... they may be taking a bit more time for the next step ... Hey ... they haven't sold out of the D300s yet ... both B&H and Adorama seem to have them in stock ...

It will be interesting to see if the new Canon 70D puts any pressure on Nikon to release something to counter it.

I think the 70d is Canon's answer to the D7100, not a proactive strike at releasing something first (that would require an answer from Nikon)....The 7D and D300 were competitors, so if the rumors are true, and Canon does eventually release a 7d mark II, THEN we will prob see a D400...from what i gather, i think the 7dII is closer to release than the D400 is.....

I think the 70d is Canon's answer to video-ing period. It is pretty lukewarm for stills photography. Well inheriting the 7d's 19-AF X points is great. Meh.

D300 might've been a strong seller, but its successor the D300s was terrible compared to the 7d. If the d7100 is raking in the dough for Nikon, is there any profitable reasons for the d400 from a shareholder perspective? Nikon like any other businesses are out for $$$.

Short answer : Yes. Camera sales of the D7100 will start to tail-off after the first year after peaking around 6 months (not just the 7100 but most cameras) .... then is the time to up-sell to a D400.

Frogfish ... I hope you are right, but I thought the same thing after the D7K and that never materialized either.

^ that might be more like it.

I mean the D7000 came out after the D300s. No D400..... wait wait. D800. Still no D400. Wait wait. D600. Still no D400. Wait some more.... D7100. Still no D400.

And thus we come full circle... those that believe the pro-level DX body is dead and those that believe (hope) that Nikon will wake up and release a D400.

If Nikon is smart, they will announce a D400 this August.

If Nikon were smart they would release BEFORE Canon and take some wind out of their sails.

Nikon is not Samsung where there are every type of products on their shelves waiting to be announced. So that it can pop the balloon off of its rivals. Nikon is a small imaging company.

Correct, all the more reason Nikon should have announced the D400 a couple of years ago with people now asking when the D500 will come out.

But, since Canon should be coming out with a 7D mkII soon, Nikon would be smart to get the D400 announced before Canon announces the the new 7D ... that's assuming the D400 exists.

Just a rumor but Nikon Rumors is saying there will be a wave of new Nikon products announced this coming August/September. These will possibly include the D400 and a new DX zoom as well as a new 300 f/4 lens:

Well that's encouraging. I suspect the new zoom will be another 18-XX consumer lens, but there's always hope that it will be something cool like:

16-60 f/2.8 AFS VR DX
45-135 f/2.8 AFS VR DX

But honestly, at this point I just want to see some DX love from Nikon.
