I think then we can look at Canon for D400 future. Looking at duopoly history, if Canon comes out with 7D MK 2 I feel it's almost certain that Nikon will have D400 or D310

7D II is not a rumour. The only rumours have been about when it would arrive. Canon themselves stated in 2013 they were working on 7D replacement, but at the time (early 2013) had not decided what the best direction to take with the camera. I fully expect to see 7D II announced in time for Photokina.

Well it's not going to happen.
Canon knows that if they announce the 7DII Nikon will trump them with a D400.
So why release an obsolete product?

D810 raw buffer depth is very impressive, esp for DX mode:

Yes it is ... with that kind of depth on a $3K FX body (in DX mode) they could do 1/2 that depth in a $1.8K DX body and make a lot of people very happy. Ideal for me would be 4-7 seconds.

Given what's going on now, if there ever was a d400 it would be $2200 which of course would drop later. Still that's over a grand less that could be spent on lenses or pizza.

At $2200 they better make it with an integrated grip like a D4 body

Only in our dreams, Andre. Integrated grip is an exclusive of single-digit bodies, and that includes the "pro" D300. That grip is a requirement for my imminent purchase, so the options are narrowed (and more expensive ).

My D2Xs is the last Pro Nikon DX body. They can bury me with it as there will be no replacement.
I keep my D3/D700 close to me as well, fat pixels...no stinkin' video. Time to move on, dreamers.
The writing's on the wall, and captured obscenely by a D800(D810)/Sigma 50 f1.4 "A"

At this point, just give me the D7100 with a bigger buffer and I'd be fine without any D400 or equivalent. Now sure, even with this I'd still find a D400 like camera useful and I would keep wishing for it. And yes, I would also like a little more in that D7100 with the bigger buffer such as more external controls and the usual requests that if we are not careful lead us back full circle to simply pining for a D400 again. But really, give me that D7100 with only the bigger buffer and I would really be able to get by just fine.

Agreed ! While I much prefer a D300 / D800 style body, the real killer of the D7100 is the buffer.

Could it be that all we will see this year is s models?

Perhaps the next one will be a D7100s or would it be called a D7110?

I'm fine with that if one of those ends up being a D7100s with a five second buffer depth in full RAW mode. And keeping the price to $1200

ONLY if 'S' stands for sexy, as in blonde! I did get to use a D7100 over the weekend. Aside from the buffer being dead, it's a great camera. 24MP, and no OLPF, the Siggy 35 sings on this camera.

I think a lot more than a buffer upgrade would be included in a D7100.
It would have Expeed 4 which would get better performance out af a same (but tweeked) Sensor.
Usable ISO 12,800 and
It could also enable 1080 P60 and 720 P120 Video

We can only dream of unlimited continuous shooting
Or get a $2k Shogun

That would be sweet!

Seems like the D810 is it. Two cameras in one so to say

Having done my FX due diligence this weekend, the consensus is that the VF experience leaves much to be desired when using DX mode: the active area is difficult to discern, and shrunken. After enjoying my D300 VF, with 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification, I wouldn't want to go there. I could imagine using 5:4 mode because the vertical range is preserved, and 5:4 is an attractive format.

FX this week!
