I don't think Nikon and Canon are waiting for each other to make the first move then announce their offering. These sophisticated cameras, if they exist, must have been designed quite some time ago and have been tested in the field for months and months, it's not something they can pull out of their hat quickly after their competition announce the new model.

I agree, however both Nikon and Canon customers have been waiting many years (far beyond a normal refresh cycle) for a replacement, and there is a guaranteed market there, but neither company has delivered. Pretty well every other camera has been updated, even the 1 series and Coolpix lines, and a couple rounds of FX cameras, but not the D300 or Canon 7D. I'm not sure what the reason is, but I don't think either company wants to be first unless they know it'll be a winner. Who knows though. All I know is a lot of people are going to be happy if we see a true replacement, and it would be so easy to make, entirely out of preexisting parts (D7100 sensor, D4/D4s AF, appropriately sized buffer, Expeed 4, D800 body/controls/meter, 8FPS/9-10 with grip). Boom, done. Sell for $1999 or even $2199 and rake in the profits. Those would fly off the shelves, but there has to be a reason they haven't bothered yet.

Just sold my 2-month old D7100, the buffer is just too limited for what I used it for -- airshows. If the D810 can do 7-8 fps in cropped mode (20MP?), I may get one, if not I will seriously consider the new Sony A7II and the Sony 70-400mm lens.

D800 in DX crop mode is ~15.3 MP and in 1.2 crop mode it is ~25 MP. If you're hoping for 7-8 FPS, if we get really lucky, it will be in DX mode with the grip. I don't think you'll see it otherwise, but it's anyone's guess.

No way the D810 is going to do 7-8 FPS in crop mode. Why? Because Nikon doesn't want to give us a 36MP camera that won't have to be upgraded.

Are you saying they never heard of the term "be all you can be".
Nikon keeps giving us crippled cameras on purpose?
It sometimes seems that way,
but why would they when technogy keeps advancing anyway?

I think they are just overly conservative.
With all the flak they got on the D800 and D600 problems,
can you really blame them?

This month, I officially gave up on the mythical D400, and will go single-digit FF: a pain because I have to rebuild my kit. Won't be easy (or inexpensive) to replace the D300 + 17-55/2.8.

Baahumbug! The rumor fo a 7D MkII has been around almost as long as the rumor of a D400.

IMO, the D400 will come out when the 7DmkII comes out. Maybe both are fictional, but Canon or Nikon would not want one to release the other without something to match.

Well, the D810 is NOT a D300 replacement, but I suppose it might work in crop mode ... which would be a pain in the butt ... and at $3300 vs. $2000 that is quite a premium to pay to only use 1/2 of the sensor.

Using the D800 in DX crop mode is a major pain in the butt.

You're still using the full size viewfinder that corresponds to FX, but you get some little indicators in the viewfinder to show you how to compose in DX, which is about the center-most 50% of the viewfinder. (I haven't tried it in LiveView, but I presume it is similar.) But believe me, it's nowhere near as easy as it is to compose with as a dedicated DX camera is. I'm using my D800 mostly with the 1.2 crop, but I still have to remind myself, not to base the composition on what I see in the full viewfinder.

Do you know how long product planning/design/manufacturing/release takes?

Canon and Nikon don't directly/immediately respond to each other except possibly with small feature changes to already-planned product releases. They respond to the changing market, to available technologies, to customers, even to speculation or competitive analysis, but they don't say "Gee, Canon released a 7D II, we'd better release something quick!"

I don't know exactly what their concept-to-release timeline is, but I suspect it's no shorter than 12-18 months. They can't just release something because Canon did it - not unless they already did all the design/prototyping/planning work up front, which are costs that can only be recouped through sales so they may as well release a product.

Do you know that there is absolutely no leaking of any information between Nikon and Canon? Can you then explain why flagship models tend to be released in the same year? I'm not disagreeing with your points, but I think there is a bit more to it than what your saying. I think Nikon has a close eye on Canon and vice versa. I think both Canon and Nikon have both realized that a pro crop camera maybe isn't the best marketing decision, but if one plays its cards, I'm thinking the other will call.

In other words, I bet both Nikon and Canon have Pro crop bodies out in the wild they are testing. Whether they release them or not is another story that may be dependant on the other company more than what the market wants, what technology exists etc.

7D II is not a rumour. The only rumours have been about when it would arrive. Canon themselves stated in 2013 they were working on 7D replacement, but at the time (early 2013) had not decided what the best direction to take with the camera. I fully expect to see 7D II announced in time for Photokina.
