I feel nikon learned from their greatest achievement and failure at the same time: the D3/D700/D300

So they nixed the D700/D300 replacements and said if you want an affordable pro feature set you will have to pay for it/no more freebies

Not really. I'd be glad to pay $1800 for the features and performance of a D400, but there are none to buy and so Nikon doesn't get my money. I suppose somehow that teaches me a lesson

There is no reason for them to announce anything before CES in January...

The Nikon rep for the Mountain West was at the Mike's Camera expo in Denver this weekend. I spoke with him as we looked over the bodies that Nikon currently offers. I mentioned that I'd love to buy a new body then and there, but that I was waiting for the D300s successor, since I like to shoot wildlife. We went over the current body options, and he admitted that they don't offer what I want/need. I asked when we would see such a body, and he didn't know. He said that he gets many comments such as mine concerning a pro DX body.

Like many Japanese companies, Nikon is very tight about future products. The rep almost certainly doesn't know a thing...

Maybe Nikon believe that the lack of a D400 for wildlife/birding, forcing people to a D4/D3s, leads to increased sales in their longer glass. Meaning higher profits and less expenditure on R&D !

Ah ... no! People just give up or go with a smaller format like M3/4

Because most d300s shooters have an extra $15,000 to buy a d4 and a 500mm lens right? More people can afford a $1500-2000 body with a 300f4 +tc or the new 80-400

OK, I give up on renaming once a month, and realistically, if they do not do a D400 in 2014 I just don't see it happening unless they choose to do a "retro" DX pro body in another 10 years . So to make my life easy, it's now "D400 in 2014 or Bust!".

Andre,

Sounds like you have come to a realistic conclusion.
You may have to wait for the "retro" Pro DX.

I am now expecting a "Flagship DX" D7200 next year.
Improvements could be:
Expeed 4
Bigger cache
Faster shooting speed
Usable ISO at 12800
1+ hour of 1080P 60 Video (in 4GB segments)

OK, not in August, but September ... NOPE ... OK, October! Nah! November to be sure!pray. NO! OK screw December ... D400 in 2014 or BUST!

Bust.
I see…………...an APS-C sensor in a circa-1975 Nikkormat body with faux-ostrich skin grip on the guts of a D7100 and a D5300 AF. Attached is a nostalgic (and plastic) Nikkor 'E' series 28mm lens, and in a souvenir polyester carrying bag/man-purse. To complete the kit is a side-burn trimmer and Nikon-logo bell bottom trousers.

OK, but I'll be wearing my purple cords and wallabies shoes.

^^^^ You guys are just mean!

I'm not holding my breath for a D400, but if it does not come in 2014, then it's pretty clear it is not coming. There is still a chance in 2014 ... Thom Hogan seems to think so as well.

My only other hope is that a D7200 comes out that fixes the buffer issues of the D7100 but keeps all the other goodness of the D7100 ... I'll have to check out the ergonomic/handling of the D7100 again to say if it will suit me in that regard ... but Nikon might not be leaving me a choice.

I think that's exactly what they're hoping...But I'm holding out too Andre. At least for now. There was a nice LNIB D7100 on B/S recently..I was very tempted.

Yea, it sure seems that way, which makes no sense given that a D400 would be a more expensive camera with a higher profit margin. Nikon is so focused price points I guess they see the D600 as covering that space ... maybe in price, but not in features. There's more to a camera than its sensor and IQ.

No doubt. I'm still using my D200 over the D7000 when I don't need high iso. I prefer it in almost every way over the D7000 and I'm afraid I'll feel the same way about the D7100. But there is no getting away from the the superior IQ and focusing of the newer models.
