If one does come out, it will not be till the spring/summer when the 7D mkII is suppose to come out.

Nikon has really been putting out some wired cameras that I have no interest in.

D4 is the only one that I'd buy and saving for. Now if Nikon would put out a D400 w/ 24mp, 8fps and big buffer or a D800 w/ D4 or D610 sensor, 8fps and big buffer then I'd bite.

+1

Finally gave in and bought a D4 last weekend after realizing that I rarely cropped my D800 images more than 50% due to poor IQ and have been getting more frustrated with its lack of speed. Tried a D4 at a local raptor shoot a couple of weeks ago. OMG! Now I know what I've been missing.

I'm actually considering selling my D800. I'm still hopeful that a D400 will eventually show up, but even if it does everyone is dreaming if they think it's going to have the best AF, high FPS, a really deep buffer, and a top-notch low-noise sensor if it comes in anywhere around $2k. Hence my decision to buy the D4 now. But I could be wrong. We'll know for certain by the end of 2014.

Oh hum ... 10 days before another name change ... and now even Thom Hogan is thinking next year ... at least he has not given up hope ... but there are signs he's wavering.

The D400 will make an appearance sooner or (probably) later. However Nikon will not want to cannibalise sales of the D7100, D800E and D4 just yet. Let them run for a while longer and then when sales start to flag bring in the D400 before starting the update cycle of those above. I guess

During the time that the Canon 7D has been in production the model directly below it, the Canon 50D, has been updated twice with the 60D and 70D. Similarly the Nikon D90 was replaced by the D7000 and that was followed by the D7100.

Both have also released "affordable" full frame cameras which were around the same price point as the D300s and 7D. Obviously like anyone else I have no real insight into what these companies are thinking when it comes to product development, but I do know that they are each interested in making money. If there was a lot to be made by developing and releasing the D400 and 7D Mark II, it would have happened by now.

My guess is that Nikon and Canon both recognized that there was a strong demand for a full frame camera in the $2,000 range - hence the arrival of the D600 and 6D. But that's the right at the price point for advanced cropped sensor bodies so then you have cameras competing against each other for sales. Now, that wouldn't be a problem IF the demand for the advanced cropped sensor bodies was just as strong as it was for the affordable full-frame because each serves a unique purpose.

I think that each company was hoping that the D7000 / D7100 and 60D / 70D would serve as their new "flagship" cropped sensor bodies (I think Nikon may have even used that term with the D7100) because that's probably the price point that most people are interested in before moving to full frame. They figured that some of the D300s and 7D owners would step down because the less expensive bodies met most of their needs (and they could increase demand for those bodies) and others would step up to the D4 / D800 and 1DX or 5D III depending on their needs - thereby leaving a relatively small pool of customers who were seriously interested in a D400 and 7D Mark II.

Having said all of that, there are still rumors that these cameras are coming next year so who knows. Maybe they're just running on a 6 month business plan and making decisions with a Magic 8 ball. It sure is fun to speculate though.

Dream on... Have you not heard that Nikon is to "focus" on less models in their line up with higher returns.

Will the higher returns result in more refurbs?

(Sorry, I couldn't help it!)

Which will happen first? The D400 coming out or this thread surpassing the number of posts on the Manual Focus Nikon Glass?

If the D7100 is the new "FlagShip" DX camera, they need an update with larger cache etc.
Perhaps using the Expeed 4 will help?

I will know more when my D5300 arrives.
If it is a marketing success, you can expect a D7200 sooner than a D400.

+1 --- honestly if it had a 3 second buffer, I'd be happy with a D7100 with the optional grip attached.

Boy, you sure do give up easily.... Just the differences in UI make me unhappy with the d7100 that I've been playing with the last couple of weeks or the d7k that I've owned for the last year or so.

Yes, a bigger buffer would make the camera more appealing, but it still won't be a really good replacement for a d300, IMO. Can we adapt to it? Sure. We can adapt to most anything. But, that doesn't change anything other than what you're willing to give up to get a better sensor.

The d7100 is a nice camera, quite capable for many things, but I'll continue to wait and see if a better option will come along. YMMV

Frankly I agree with you

I have given up on the D400
I think Nikon has shifted to smaller, lighter, and cheaper cameras.
I am sure there will be a D5 however and maybe even a MX camera but those will be expensive.

and I do not like the smaller cameras as well as the D100-300, D700, and D800 bodies for still photography, especially Sporting Events.
That is why I got rid of my D7100 and D600 and have gotten a D800e.

***************
Kerry,

I understand you perfectly ... I'd be happy if the D7100 had the larger buffer, but I'd be elated to see a D400 ... When I bought the D300, I figured the D500 would be out by now.

But honestly I have long wanted to do a two camera system. A D400 / D7100 combo would suit me just fine ... but that's a dream and I don't have that kind of money to keep putting into it.

Cheers,
Andre
