The D1 was actually a 10mp sensor that output to 5mp, IIRC. Maybe they could do something like that for better noise performance and speed. Dunno.

I suspect that you are thinking of the D1x, which had a 5MP sensor with asymmetrical pixels initially upsampled to 6MP output. Later on the upsampled output was 10MP with the buffer upgrade.

You are probably correct, sir. I don't know a whole lot about Nikon prior to the d70. I just seem to remember folks talking about one of the original d1 series being an actual 10mp, when the d200 came out at 10mp.

Thanks for the clarification.

If Nikon ever makes the D400, what price point are you guys expecting? With the D7100 going for $1150 and the D600 on fire sale at $1600, there doesn't seem to be much wiggle room in terms of a price that would make sense for consumers.

I think 1800 would be a good price.

I don't want to be mean or a jerk, but I see this comment rather frequently and I don't understand where it comes from. The d600 and d300 are significantly different cameras, with significantly different feature lists and capability. The features/capability are what determine the price, and suitability to task, of the body. It's tantamount to asking why the d4 is $3000 more than the d800. They are targeted at different users for different purposes.

In direct answer to your question, I would expect a d400 to come in around the same price as the d300 did, ie $1800 US. The price of the d600 has no bearing on that any more than the price of the d5300 has on the V2.

The D400, if it is ever made, will be the top of the line DX camera with a pro body build in the D800 style body. It's prices is driven by its performance features and build, not its sensor.

The D600 is a consumer body with an FX sensor ... it's price is driven by the sensor, not its performance features or body build.

I don't think the price of one impact the other because they are in different line-ups. It's like comparing a sports car to a pickup truck.

That said, I'd expect the D400 to come in at no less than $1800 but more likely $2000.

I honestly think that Nikon's problem right now is pricing. Granted, there is a large niche out there willing to pay $2k for a well-spec'd D400. But the majority of buyers who made the D300/s such a success were, in truth, probably buying more camera than they needed. When the D300 first came out it was the best Nikon you could buy without the giant price jump to the D3. Today, those same buyers who bought the D300 because it was the best (not because it was fast or because it has an AF-ON button or a large buffer) have the option of a D600 at a similar price or the best small body camera in the D800 for an extra $1000 or a very well spec'd camera with (likely) the same sensor for $1000 less.

I personally think the D400 won't come until Nikon clears most of the remaining D600 inventory. Regardless of how high spec the D400 is, it will be a hard sell against $1500 D600s. I think if and when we see the D400, it will probably be a new product category. And then we'll have the same situation we had with the D700.

Well, If (and that is a big IF) a D400 is released I think it will be a camera that will surprise. As mentioned here by a few readers already does it has to settly himself between the D7100 DX and the D600 FX. Yes, a DX is targeting a various public but I am currently not convinced that a 36MPx camera like the D800(E) is able to replace a DX camera. It requries a lot of knowledge to handle this beast (have one myself).

I think the D400 could b e a mirrorless camera and can only hope the best on the market. A EVF that can convince me as currently a NEX of Fuji camera can't do that (own both).
Battery life is another thing. Me as a birder don't want a camera that drains battery faster like there is no tomorrow. I am perhaps carried away but would be an early adaptor if this camera would hit the market

Yea, Thom Hogan just posted about it too ...

http://www.dslrbodies.com/newsviews/nikon-germany-goes-fx.html

Of course Thom does say not to read too much into it ... as in DX is not going away ... but it shows Nikon is not focusing much on DX for serious photography ... as in the D400

Well, unless it comes today, which is not likely, it seems the title needs an update. Done!

What's in November in terms of photography-industry events? I don't follow them, but my guess is anything announced would be around an event, probably CES in January. I'm almost certainly going to be there - should be interesting...

I think it is 4 times more likely that we will see a faster "Flagship DX" D7200 than a D400
The Canon 7D body does not compare the the D300 and it is unlikely that they will ever produce a large/Pro DX camera ever again.

Now that its near pipe dream. I'm thinking D400 in a D3/D4 style pro body with the grip built in. Skipping any notion of light weight.
