At this rate their next big release will probably be a film camera

Obviously they have fired those 'idiots' who gave us the D3 & D300

I do not think so. This is a long-term strategy of the "idiots". It is so simple when you see the big picture.

.................DX..................................................FX

D50..........D70...........D2X..................-..............-.............-

D60..........D80...........D300................-............D700........D3

D3200.....D5200........D7100.............D600........D800........D4

Of course there were "intermediate" models like D40, D3000, D3100 or D90 etc because the speed of replacement is not the same at every level.

D3200 is less of a camera than D40 was ages ago. D40 class does not exist anymore.
D5200 is less of a camera than D70 was ages ago. For a time D90 and D5000 were coexisting but now D90 class is dead.
D7100 is less of a camera than D300 which was less of a camera than D2X. Both D2X class and D300 class are dead.

Only FX line is really growing. DX is slowly dying.

At this time Nikon has 6 different lines of DSLR's comparing with just three 7-8yrs ago, two or three in CX and as an extra the Coolpix A. I really do not think they can afford to enlarge their DSLR lineup with an extra model. Sorry for you guys but D400 is like a wet dream.

How about this option?

If they won't release a D400, they should offer a program where I tape a $500 bill to the back of my D7100 and send it to service where they carefully remove the $500 bill and install a 3 to maybe 4 second buffer at 6FPS.

And they do it in less than 2 weeks!

Since I got tired waiting for the D400, I've ordered an E-M1 and a GH3. I can assure you: There are no reasons to go into menus on those cameras more than with a D300 or any other Nikon DSLR. The Panasonic has 5 programmable Fn buttons, and I believe the Olympus has just as many. Should I need to go into a menu, it will appear in the viewfinder. I see no reason why Nikon wouldn't be able to make a similar solution with the V3. And remember: the smaller sensor size would negate the need for large

That's good feedback and information. I guess with the Nikon 1 system things are not so rosey. Again, no reason it has to be that way ... just the way Nikon did it.

The funny thing with the 1 system is that, even though the cameras didn't score high in most reviews, most users seem to be very happy with their performance, even with the V1 and its somewhat flawed ergonomics. The V2 is a fantastic camera, and some of the lenses, particularly the 32mm f/1.2, are very good, although somewhat expensive. Still, dpr hasn't even bothered to review that model. What mostly made me choose m4/3 over Nikon in this case was the lens selection, which does still not cover all all areas, but that will change.

Image quality of the smaller sensor will obviously never become as good as DX or FX sensors, but as technology develops, it will become good enough, which is what counts for most photographers.

I'd go for that ... though the D7100 body is not a D300 body, but at least the high FPS would be usable.

Yes I see what Nikon are doing but it seems they are so focused on their long term strategy that they are failing to see the present opportunities right in front of their face. I don't think they are stupid (they can't afford to be with 75% of their turnover in one basket) but when your primary business is cameras you need to innovate or die. They do not appear to be willing to take any detours off the "Roadmap" despite the obvious benefits of such a trip.

Nikon have become reactionary and predictable so the next 12 months will be very interesting to see if Nikon will hit some home runs or offer us more of the same old same old (fortunately for Nikon, Canon have been similarly uninspiring in recent times).

I'm not that optimistic about a D400 either but it really is a no-brainer for Nikon. Sure they have tried to lure D300/s users with their D600/D7100/D800 offerings but I'm pretty sure that many of these folks who already own one these bodies would also buy a D400 in a heartbeat. They moan about a saturated DSLR market and dwindling profits and yet fail to release a follow up to what was surely one of their most innovative and no doubt profitable bodies of all time in the D300.

I still think the D400 will happen and no doubt be revolutionary but Canon's 7D2 will likely be in the same league & released around the same time. Another missed opportunity Nikon.

Cheers
Leigh

Leigh,

I think you nailed it on the head. But I would go further to say that DX is enough different that it is foolish no to keep it alive (pro body included) even in the face of FX and CX.

The D610 (i.e. a D600s) is proof of Nikon's onging stupidity on this topic.

Regards,
Andre

It's a joy to watch this D400 fan club thread. Something like an AA group meeting, each one supporting the others with uplifting statements to generate fresh hope and motivation to continue with their chosen path, even right after yet another low cost FX body was announced

Anyone else want to share this morning?

LMAO ... and Apt description and one I will keep alive through Dec 31, 2013 ... After that, all I have to say is ,,|,, to Nikon and I guess I'll run my D300 into the ground and get whatever pathetic DX body they offer at the time.

I too enjoy following this thread even though I am not waiting for a D400 because I just pickup a D300 to stick my 70-200mm f2.8G VRII on instead of my D200 with its tiny display.
But what I am waiting for is not a D600 which we got for our niece as a graduation gift, but rather a D666.
Oops! Did I said D666 as for D the demon and 666 the sign of the demon?
Maybe when the D666 comes out the D400 will also be out.

You should take that d600 gift back real quick. Maybe you can still get a refund. The d610 has just been announced. Basically Nikon's way of saying "We screwed up. But we ain't fixing the d600. Let me show you the new D610...."

We got it about a little over two months ago and she has left for the country she had graduated from to work in the news industry.
Well, I did checked it out and setup all the custom functions where she will need most, and no oil issue.
Anyway I had thought her to clean the sensor, so it should be OK.

At what point will everyone give up? I'm just about there...unless they're holding out for the 7dmk2. But all the other cameras have atleast had some kind of leaks

I guess you won't be getting one when it is finally released then

While I think Nikon SHOULD have a D400, I'm certainly not saying they WILL 100% release one.

Yes I would like one but it certainly won't be the end of the world for me if it never materializes.

If we don't see it before or just after the 7D2 release then it's likely never to see the light of day.

However if and when it does appear I hope you won't mind me quoting the above in the D400 announcement thread

Cheers
Leigh

I only come to this thread for the comedy of it. I doubt I'll ever own a DX body again. The viewfinders alone on those bodies are not meant for my eyes.

Now, there's really no point. The K-3 is much cheaper than the (imaginary) D400 will be. It's even cheaper than the ancient D300s. That means that selling the Nikon gear now and buying a couple of K-3 bodies (or a K-3 plus a K-5 backup) plus the necessary lenses won't be much more expensive than upgrading from D300 to D400, if the D400 ever happens. The only serious downside I can see is an inferior flash system.

Tempting stuff. I'll see when I've paid for the GH3 and E-M1
