The integrated grips have their advantages, but I think so far I've been most pleased with the D300/D700 setup where the vertical grip has an additional multi-selector. That single feature was a godsend, and being able to remove the grip sometimes was rather nice, too.

I never take my grip off except to replace the battery in the camera ... I just hate the ergonomics and ballance without the grip. The exception would be when using my 50 f/1.8 since it's such a small lens ... but with any of my other lenses, the ballance is so much better with the grip on.

I do a lot of traveling, and sometimes you just want a smaller camera.

Different strokes for different folks - my borderline OCD won't allow me to own an oft-used camera without owning the grip as well, yet I never seem to have the grips attached.

Longing for the smallest freakin' body they can possibly make, fine tune capability is an absolute must, articulating screen would be a plus, as would be a usable viewfinder but not so critical.

A tiny slr body, stuck onto my Sigma 85, shot wide open, focused accurately, and held discreetly (articulated screen), would have me selling my backup D7k in a heartbeat.

Raptor season is almost upon us, so after toughing it out last year with my D800 I threw in the towel and picked up a D7100 today. I was waiting, hoping the D400 would be out by now, but the total silence on the rumor mill leads me to believe that if there is a D400, it's not coming in the next few months, that seems certain.

FWIW when I picked up the D7100 the sales clerk related to me that the Nikon Rep he talked to just last week was doing everything he could to poo-poo even the idea of a D400, saying there's no slot in the Nikon lineup for such a camera. I know a lot of us here think differently, but have to admit his comments seem to jibe with the total lack of rumours about such a camera, sad to say.

The reason Canon has it is because all of their modern lenses are AF-S equivalent. They don't have regular AF/AF-D lenses, so there's always been a motor to operate the aperture. Nikon just recently started adding a motor to do the same on their AF-S lenses for Live View.

I don't think this is a function of AFS lenses having and extra motor for aperture control. Nikon models like the D300s, D7000, D7100 and D600 don't have that feature enabled. So you can not change the aperture in live view even with an AFS lens. The aperture it self should be controlled electronically, just like when you manipulate a command dial in still mode. Unfortunately contolling the aperture electonically does not work on those bodies with any lens.

Of course, the sales clerk might have just been trying to ensure he didn't lose a D7100 sale...

In the end, we know that we don't know. And only time will reveal the truth.

Just sold mine today... with only 1074 clicks in five months, it clearly wasn't getting any real use.

You could have been nice and donated it to me.

Yes, that would have been nice.

Then again, you could have been quicker off the line and bought it before the other guy did.

True, but I was not looking for a good used D7100 and generally don't buy used unless it's someone I trust...now if I had known you were selling I may have been quicker ... I still think you could have made a good donation to a loving home

Could it be the announcement and release of a D400 has awaited the Expeed4 ?

I was using a D5100 as my travel camera. Now, it's a Leica IIIc.

Hey Steen ... thanks for the article ... I was not expecting TH to be back up until Monday ... he's early! Yea, Expped4 sure does sound like what a D400 needs.

Finally got around to reading that article, and certainly learned some stuff. But I love this part:

"In particular, one specification stood out: 24mp at 12 fps maximum processing speed (the previous version was limited to 14mp at 8 fps, though Nikon seems to have some specialized handling cases in EXPEED variations that exceed that). Still, that new throughput ability sounds remarkably like what a D400 would need, doesn't it?"

All I'm asking from Nikon is 24MP at 8 fps... but if they give me 12 fps, or "even" 10 fps, I'm going to be doing a Snoopy dance for joy.

Well at least my D7100 experiment was an interesting, if short lived experience. Nice camera to be sure -- certainly superior to my old D300 in terms of overall capability and IQ. I bought the D7100 in the hopes it provided enough punch to be a useful addition to my mainstay D800. But as is so often the case, paper specs don't always translate to real-world experience. Bottom line is that although the D7100 has it's charms, it really didn't impress me enough to keep it. I'll hang onto my $1100 until the D400, or D4x, or failing that a 7DII is released with a decent sensor.

From our favourite rumour site:

"I want to mention again that there is no Nikon D400 coming any time soon."

http://nikonrumors.com/2013/09/09/nikon-rumors-what-to-expect-in-the-next-few-months.aspx/#ixzz2eQk7XGDW

This thread may well rival "Your Best Nikon Shots." for length by the time this sucker is released

Cheers
