Your family seems happy enough without a thought of the D400. Ha-ha!

the "burden" is a joke for sure ... but you are very correct, it's not things that make for a happy family, that is for sure. My wife and I spend most of our recreation budget creating memories for our kids ... the left over that accrues over time is for photography.

Thus, I don't want to see a D400 announced so I can buy one this year, but I want to see one announced so I know that a pro-level DX body will be supported for some time ... with a body purchase in a few years ... which will likely be a D400 as it will be another 5-6 years before the D500 comes out ... if ever.

One more day to the final countdown from June 24-August 31, 2013 before the counter reset to 365 for September 1, 2013-August 31, 2014, or maybe 3650 for September 1, 2013-August 31, 2023.

Jokes and animosities aside, congratulation to your #6 Andre!
There is no news for a camera better than news of a coming newborn for any loving parents.

Here's Thom's take (from his new site that I'm not loving...). I sure hope he's right. I might book a trip to Singapore to buy Hans a consolation tea...

"Which brings me to the D400. It's been prototyped and a mule in the field. Details are sketchy, at best, but it's clear that Nikon has worked on a D300 followup and tested it. August/September are really Nikon's last good chance to capture the long-waiting D300 upgrader with a product targeted directly at them, I think. Failure to launch in this window will be definitely taken by most that a D400 isn't happening and that they have to come to grips with that. I definitely would be scratching my head if we don't see a D400 by the end of September. I know a lot of you argue that "FX is the future" or believe the "D7100 is the flagship of DX" line Nikon has used. The reality is that surveys show that there's still strong demand for a D300 followup (basically "the pro DX"). Strong demand at a time when a lot of camera groups are showing declines in sales. And for a product with a pretty high profit margin. I've written it before and I still stick by it: we should see a D400 this fall."

We need to raise some funds to buy a creme in order to heal the deep scratches from Thom's head at the end of this month. Period.

Ha-ha!

So, Andre, does your statement, "Well, here's to the first title update ... may it be the last!", mean you are throwing in the towel for good if your hopes and Thom's prediction don't come true by end of September?

Personally, I think it would be a bold move if Nikon comes out with a true professional DX format camera -- a D4 for crop sensor (thinking updated D2X replacement). I'm not sure of the market though, as I would expect it to be at least a $3500 camera, a step above the D800e in size, quality, and controls. But between that idealized D2X Mark II model and the D7100? I think Nikon must be really looking hard as to whether there is a profitable need for such as an intermediate pro DX model above the D7100. Obviously, time will tell!

The design point almost certainly would be evolutionary from the D300s than the D2X - figure a D800 body and AF, D7100 sensor, high-FPS, deep buffer, AF-ON and a few things to make the wait worth it (I'd love to see backlit keys). Probably video more like the 70D has, too... (though I could care less about video).

I'm not saying it impossible that they'll abandon the segment, but "D400" is still one of the top search terms on my tiny blog and I haven't written about it for months. It is a hotly-discussed product on every Nikon forum I'm on.

As a D300s user who could buy any of the "alternatives" today (D7100, D600 or D800) I can say that none of them move me. I vastly prefer the handling of my D300s over the D7100/D600 and I don't find the price/value equation for the D800 compelling. I also want the "reach" of DX, as I'm sure the BiF/Sports shooters who make up the core of the D300s crowd.

I guess we'll see - seems like Nikon could do everyone a favor and announce a direction one way or another...

Agree with everything you said Lee, except the D800 must be the best "price/value" body to be ever introduced in the photography industry IMHO

Sorry - didn't mean to imply it wasn't a fantastic camera. I meant I'd rather have a $2000 D400 and $1000 for glass

Maybe a "2XXX"? Between the D700 and D800, I don't use DX much anymore.

I put my D400 money into a dog instead...maybe by the time I get to pick her up, the camera will come into existence. Was really hoping it'd be available by the time I took my summer ending trip. I still think she'll make me happier than the camera. At least by the time I can buy the camera if it does get announced it'll have the bugs worked out.
I'll just have to make due with the D800.

Frankly, I don't think Nikon is ready to introduce the D400 yet.
There will be no need to cripple it.
It will be the cutting edge DX Flagship camera.

The new Toshiba SD card has not be released yet.
Toshiba claims that the new Exceria Pro UHS-II card boasts the fastest write speeds
in the market at 240 MB per second. Read speeds are rated at 260 MB/sec.
The UHS-II standard can support data transfer speeds up to 312 MB/sec.
The Exceria Pro will be offered in two sizes -- 16 GB and 32 GB -- and is expected to reach worldwide markets in October.
Nikon will probably be the first to use this card (ie. XQD card)

Sony and others are working on new DX Sensors with on chip AF improvements and higher ISO capabilities.
The D400 will require a new (superior sensor) if it is to command an $2k price.

I don't know, Roger. Whatever advanced technology Nikon might have available, in-house or from suppliers like Sony, may certainly change the equation for Nikon. But I'd pay $2000 to get a D7100 sensor in a D800 body with D4 AF performance (the D800 is somewhat slower), with 8 fps and at least a 40-image buffer when shooting 14-bit RAW. I don't need any other changes. In fact, I don't even want any other changes... though I'll adapt if they do something different, I'd be deeply grateful to have identical bodies and controls on my D800 and D400 cameras.

Seems to me this is a Frankencamera you could essentially put together from the existing parts bin, and that's the dream of a product company: extending and broadening the product line with relatively little R&D and design costs. Betcha this would be a high-margin item for Nikon, too.

Why would anyone want to pay $2000 for a d400??

Why not? The d300s was $1700 and if the d400 is far superior, a $300 increase isn't that much

This last July I posted my beliefs on NSN that Nikon would be coming out with a D400. Here is the body of it:

"This is going to be a top-shelf 24 mpx DX rock.
Large buffer with huge processing power (new EXPEED 4)
New AF system, more advanced than the one in the D800 and D4 (they have the Multi-CAM 3500FX)
It's definitely coming."

http://photographylife.com/nikon-d400-is-definitely-coming -

The above link was included. Why would Nikon let the DX line die? And they have not YET effectively replaced the PROSUMER D300 or the D300S. I think the D400 is coming. But if it does not come this Fall, I think it is not coming at all. They have had long enough, even with the flood. It is time now to unveil a new DX Rock to replace my D300.

And it seems the new 300 f4 AFS with VR is imminent. You know it will have the latest AFS motor, NANO coating, the latest VR, the "G" connotation for no aperture ring, and just maybe one unique glass element that would be a slight upgrade from the current model (but maybe not on that last one). This lens is going to be a lot different and a significant improvement to an outstanding lens......$2500 !

I'm excited.

I hold Sept in high expectation. And if the D400 does not happen I will buy the D800E.

My 2 cents is that Nikon isn't in any rush to make a D400, Canon wont have the 7D MII announced until next summer. So that gives Nikon plenty of time for more cool pix and 5300's. People have predicted a new 300 f4 for the last three years, one day they may be right. I just picked up a 300 f4, mainly because the aperature ring comes in handy for Nikon video. If Nikon would let you adjust the aperature in live view and during a video recording like Canon it would be a non issue. VR is not something I need in that lens for what I shoot, so its not a factor for me. Maybe Nikon should follow Canon and offer the upgraded version with and without VR so that people who don't need it can save some money.
