For those who need consistency the D7000 and D7100 can be a real PITA. They might be "better" in terms of image quality but since most hobby photographers (the people Nikon aims at selling those D7000 and other plastic fantastic multimillion pixel cameras to) have not even come close to finding the limitations of their gear, who needs "better" when most canīt even achieve "good" with what they have?

There are certain areas of photography where buffer size and fast AF are more important then having 24

If someone cannot get better shots out of a d7000 or d7100 from the d200 they do not need a different camera but some photography lessons. And I have to admit it does take better glass and camera skills with the higher mp cameras Have also shot the d200.That is why point and shoots will always have 99% of the market Doug M

Doug,

You are consistently missing the point. Photography is NOT just about IQ out of the sensor. There are other control features and ergonomic aspects that can make and older camera perform better than a newer camera. IQ is a non-issue if you can't get the shot in the first place. The limited buffer of the D7100 is a severe limitation and for the action shots that I take, a D200 or D300 will beat it every time. The availability of a 10-pin controller port also opens up options not available on a D7200 ... and if you shoot 100% manual and need to change your settings real time, again, the D200 or D300 wins hands down.

It all comes down to whether or not you push your camera to its limits and how. The D7100 simply cannot do what I need it to, but my D300 does.

Cheers,
Andre

Yes at 800 ft/lbs of torque I can pull a barn down at the same 0-60 time as pulling onto a highway ramp

Wow, a bit touchy! Clearly no point in going down that road with you any further ... But I certainly do NOT see the D7100 as a superior tool in general. In IQ with regards to resolution and high ISO, yes, but that's about as far as it goes. We'll have to agree to disagree.

I rest my case ...

WOW, that would be a colossal mistake on Nikon's part. There are still D90's and D7000's not sold ... but people are screaming for a D400.

The D7100 is relatively new, so it makes no sense that there will be a D7200 for a while. Some of us want a better body than the D7xxx series delivers at the price point and would glady spend a mere $500 more to have a body more like the D300 series.

Hope you get you're D400 Andre... then perhaps I'll get my D700 replacement...

Andre...Andre...Since you like your D300 so much and everything seems to be right where you want it, just stick a D400 label on your D300 and you will be good for the rest of your life without even spending a single cent for the upgrade.

A tool is just that....a tool.It is only as good as the person whose hand it is in.

It is also only as good as its own limitations, which is why buildings are generally not constructed with handsaws. The D7100 has a far better sensor than the D300... but again, six lousy frames of buffer capacity and no weather-sealing do not a superior wildlife shooter's tool make. The D300 provides weather-sealing, 8 fps, 5000-frame battery capacity using 8xAA, a deep buffer capacity, and a 10-pin connector, making that older camera a superior tool for some tasks and some shooters.

The hypothetical D400 would at least marry the D300 or D800 body to the D7100 sensor, creating a new product -- and a far better tool for some tasks than the existing D300 or D7100 choices -- out of existing technology with comparatively little R&D. It might bring a lot more to the table, but it would do at least that. And some of us want such a camera.

This does not seem to be a complicated concept... I don't see why it's so hard to grasp for some people. If you don't have a need for that particular tool, fine; but telling the rest of us that we don't need such a tool and that the current choices are great is just silly.

Once you experience the 416 hp, 443 lb-ft of torque (with 100% of torque available at any RPM), and zero response lag of the electric motor in Tesla's Performance Model S, I promise you'll have a new favorite powertrain. It's just a better tool.

You have a point there.Love Tesla and looking forward to what they come up with in the future.I am all for better tools..and learning to take advantage of them. Some just get caught up with a line of thinking and are too stubborn to change. Doug M

Personally. I'm not currently in the market for a d400 if it came out. But I Completely see the reason for wanting one by the folks who do! Andre and Rodolfo explained it very well. At this point anyone continuing the argument just likes to argue and has an ego problem. get past it.

Let me chime in... I want a D400 which would basically be the D300 with newer circuitry, a new sensor, dual CD card slots...and basically that's it. If it has to have video, well, then I'll accept that, but I'd probably never use it other than the occasional clip, which I can already do with any one of the handful of point 'n shoots I have. The camera itself doesn't need much improvement, because it was so well designed in the first place. Not sure why that would be so difficult to make, and for some of you to accept. It would kick the D7100's ass because once the sensor issue is addressed, there's no real comparison between them for me. Sorry D7100 fans, but I don't want to go backwards in capability, and I don't want to go FX at this time.

I doubt Nikon would do something so damn simple, though. Too bad.

The lack of a D400 doesn't mean that those waiting for it can't use a D7100 or a D300 to get great shots. In fact, they are at this right moment. However, as a person becomes better at what he/she does (myself not included), they then need a more specialized tool to handle the task more efficiently. Preaching that it's about the photographer not the tool doesn't apply in this case, because those waiting for the D400 are already good photographers. The tool will just make their job easier.

I understand that some are anticipating a new DX Pro camera such as the D400 since it's an unfalsifiable argument, however, I really don't understand those who argue with such certainty that Nikon "will definitely not" announce a D400.

Exactly so. For some reason, that concept seems to get lost frequently.

I don't understand it either, although there seems to be a ton of folks that love their current camera and can't figure out why it isn't the perfect tool for everyone else.

Personally, on the FX side, I like my d800 and love my d3s. On the DX side, I like my d7k and love my d300. But, that love story is getting old and the d300 is looking rather long in the tooth. The d300 sensor is a little too noisy, especially compared to modern sensors. I'm not interested in a d7100, because of the aforementioned limitations. I'd like to replace my d300 with a new body, that has the same capability, but with a modern sensor. Seems pretty simple to me.

Guys.. I think we need to start a camera company. I will work on the seed money.Rodolfo you work on getting the engineers.Andre you work on the ergonomics...Lets do it....10 fps clean to Iso to 120, 000 .Autofocus that has the software to zoom in on a fly with a background of moving water. And a dedicated button or dial for any thing you want that can be changed in the menus as well as having a body more substantial better balanced body then a d7100 or d600....can always dream Doug M

Must decline, though. Much as I love starting companies and have done my share of that, I finally decided back in 2006 that family-business consulting is the most fun I've ever had at work, so I'm keeping that as my permanent gig.
