p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 28mm 1.8G I pray to you

How has this little gem chugged along the past year with so little fanfare (compared to the siggy 35)? I just picked up a mint used copy and I'm completely blown away by it. I had the old 28/2.8D and wrote off the focal length. I then had a change of thought and wanted to see if I'd like 28mm if it were faster than 2.8. The color/contrast is near perfect to me and the rendering is just beautiful. My bread and butter lens is the 85/1.4, but since selling my 24-70 I've felt a massive hole in my line up. I tried filling it with the Tokina 16-28, and while it's a great lens, it didn't fill the hole. I think this 28mm has finally filled that hole

Few samples below from the park today:

The Nikon 28 had its 'hurrah!' when it came out. A great lens for the price.

Nice pics of the little girl. I never cared for the 28mm focal length. Are you FX or DX here?

Nice ones, Jason. You must have missed all the threads/samples around release time...
It's much better on FX than DX and have totally been enjoyin' mine as well (early adopter)

Yeah, I'm FX w/ a D700. Haven't even thought of throwing it on a DX body.

I saw some of the threads when it was released, mostly people crying about focus shift and/or cheap build.

Beautiful shots, Jason! Perfect use of DOF.

Cute little girl, savour the moments as they grow up way too fast!

Congrats on the new lens I just got my copy of the 28 1.8G today but I haven't tried it on the camera yet. I have no idea what the "cheap build" commenters are smoking. This lens is nowhere near cheap. It is light.. but absolutely SOLID. Based on the comments, I was expecting something like a loose 18-55 kit lens, but this lens is nowhere near that. In fact, I would even rate it very close, if not equal to the 24 1.4G's build. Next time I read someone saying that the 28 1.8G's build is cheap, I'd question them if they've even held one.

I completely agree. I was expecting kit lens slop. There's a HAIR of play on the focus ring to which I say, so what? Someone who is doing MF only is probably not going to buy this lens. It feels like the same construction as Nikon's flagship glass. All this coming from someone who owns the 85/1.4D and 300/2.8 AF-I, a lens combo that you could safely play baseball with.

Meh. Problem with 28mm, at certain angle it distorts. See the little girl's legs.

Also talk about CA!!!

Best value Nikkor prime IMHO is the cheapo 35mm 1.8!

Mmm...., but the 35/1.8G is a DX-lens.
It can be used on FX but with a lot of drawbacks.

I'd say you (op) and the 28 are getting along just fine. Nice shots.

I donīt see any CA on the girl. Got me curious though. Where do you think these pictures suffer from CA?

Also, distortion doesnīt seem to be an issue from the pictures posted there. There is a bit of barrel, but not in the center of the image.

Looks like a nice lens. I think Iīll have a look at one to possibly replace my old Sigma 28mm f1,8. The Sigma takes great pictures but my copy suffers from haze on one of the elements in the focus group and itīs just too big to carry around conveniently.

28mm on other lenses may show more obvious signs of perspective distortion, but this lens shows very little. If anything it's a natural perspective distortion, as opposed to the compression given by longer lenses.

Yes, let's talk about the complete and total lack of any CA. I was amazed too

35 looks like a 50. 28 looks like a wide angle.
