lol. did anyone actually read my post? i'm well versed in all of the 50mm options out there. i even state "I'm aware that people love the Sigma 50 1.4...I owned one...but every Sigma lens I've owned has been hit or miss (great when it hits, unusable when it misses)."

I then state "I'm interested to see how you are using the 50L. Post up your wedding shots taken with this lens and if you can give me your impressions. Thanks all!"

"Why not go to the gear forum then, Chuck?" I did. I found a lot of threads with 50L owners with more money than talent. I want to see how skilled users (ie, wedding forum members) are putting this lens to use.

Here ya go, Chuck.

These are RANDOM 50L shots from random catalogs over the past year. They are not "best" or worse, but simply to show "how I use the lens".

They are quickly output from LR, so I didn't do my normal sharpening.

Also, I'm not a "wide open" shooter.

Hope that helps!

My Sigma 50 f1.4 is going back for repair. It is great from 6-7 feet and in.
The other way it back focuses something fierce.
The 50L is on my short list of gear updates.

I shot a lot with the nifty fifty. When editing I noticed how sharp this guy is, it keeps up with my 85 1.8

Surprisingly sharp considering the money it costs! I've found focus accuracy was just slightly behind the Canon 50/1.4.

50L only if you remain in f1.2. Else the Sigma 50 1.4 is just as sharp, faster AF

The Sigma can suffer noticeably in focusing capability in very low light in one-shot mode when compared even to Canon's 50/1.4.

The Sig also falls behind Canon's 50/1.4 when it comes to use in servo mode: significantly higher percentage of out-of-focus in servo with the Sigma.

It's a very nice-handling lens as far as how it is just working with it in the hands. Try manually focusing the nifty fifty some time.

Absolutely love 50L. I like it a lot better than 35L (which is soft and not as sharp as Nikon's 35g). 50L is Sharp at wide open 1.2.

Hi, Chunk,

I have 50/1.2L, and love it even its AF is not as reliable as 85/1.2L or 35/1.4L or the 24/1.4L with every bodies I have had.
I use the 50/1.2L with 1Dx and 5D III now, I can get very high keeper rate by using center AF point only and recompose even at f/1.2.

In your case as you got the 24-70/2.8L II and 35L, I would say just use them as they will fit your style, I have read every posts you posted and noticed your style have been changed since you started.....
Your 24-70/2.8L II will cover every(or most) shots for you, and the 35L for some really low light situations etc.

Good luck !

Honestly the way you shoot I would get a 50 1.8 plastic fantastic and save 1200$ to take your kids on vacation or your wife out to dinner. If it is not going to be your main go to lens and with all the variations between copies I think a 50 1.8 would work just as well and only cost like 150$.

This is why we use either f/1.8 or f/2 primes instead of f/1.4s. The DOF difference doesn't justify the cost difference (although it's not too bad with the 50/1.4).

When's the last time anyone here pulled out the nifty fifty to shoot a wedding? Now don't get me wrong, I used to own the nifty fifty and it was a fine budget lens that one could get pretty nice results from. The 50L , imo, is indeed worth the $1200 more. Now, I think congratulations are in order for my avoiding the usual car and fine restaurant/chef analogies.

Is it that bad on Canon? We've got both the AF-D and AF-G 1.8s on Nikon, and they're pretty sweet.

I use my 50L quite a bit during the day. I love it mostly for details and portraits. The focus can be frustrating but when it hits it really does sing. Rarely ever shoot it wide open anymore, F/1.8 - 2.0 is my sweet spot with it. I would say it gets used 30 % of the day. It gets tight quick in smaller spaces.

I could post some photos one of these days...but I am rarely using the 50L lately. I use it sometimes for getting ready, cake cutting, and reception dances, or when my 85L get some unwanted smears from fingers, elbows, etc...and I can't clean it during the shoot.

I like the perspective sometimes, but only at f/1.2-f/1.6. It loses its appeal to me very quickly when stopping down, and it doesn't come close to approximating the bokeh or isolation effect of the 85L. I won't use it for full body shots because the background blurring isn't enough for me.
