Will the new Nikon 80-400 AFS G work well with the TC 1.7 II ? Will it autofocus with a D800? Thanks for your help

The D800's AF is supposed to be "f/8 capable", so it should be able to reliably use autofocus with lenses as dim as f/8. The 80-400, at the longer end, is an f/5.6 lens, and with a 1.4x TC (a 1-stop light loss), it will be an f/8 lens. So in other words, AF with a 1.7 TC (a 1.5-stop light loss), it may not AF when the max aperture is smaller than f/8.

Does that answer your question?

In good light it will autofocus, but cloudy days it will be useless.

I haven't tried the 1.7X on my 80-400 so here are my first test shots. Late morning overcast day. It will AF but it's sloooooow! Handheld with VR on.

That's still really good for 1/80th @ 650mm, I wish I had steady hands like that. My photos would just look like a sea of green,

When you take 4 or 5 shots of the same subject you're bound to get one with no handshake!
