I'm looking for a 70-200 f/2.8 non IS tripod collar. I'm considering getting the real one, but what is a quick substitute that is cheap in price but not cheap in quality?

Get the real one . Any of the knock offs can have defects in them . You really can't know the source for any of them
The way to look at it is what's the worst that can happen . And with a tripod collar thats the thing snapping and you whole rig taking a tumble onto a hard rock .
If that happened with the canon ring you have some comeback with canon for the damage caused , with the knock offs you are n you own with a big bill

I just received a Fotodiox collar for the 100L from Amazon. It cost $40 but thats less than 1/4 the cost of the Canon ring. Seems sturdily made and fits perfectly. Also, its from Amazon, I could have returned it if necessary. I wouldn't buy the $11 one though.

I've owned a 3rd party collar and the Canon for my 70-200 f/4. The price differential is amazing but with the 3rd party I found that by lightly pressing the camera back with the camera in the collar the camera would move forward a little bit. When I did the same thing with the Canon collar nothing moved.

I don't know if the movement with the 3rd party collar really mattered or not, I don't usually press the back of my camera when making a photograph. But since the whole idea of the collar is to add stability, the fact that things could pretty easily be moved with the 3rd party didn't seem like a good thing.

The difference between them seemed to be in the collar lock, that was where the movement came from with the 3rd party collar as best I could tell.

The 3rd party collars I've bought worked fine on my f/4, the f/2.8 has a totally different design.

I'd buy the one from Amazon as long as you have return rights. Unless its shipped by Amazon, returning it is risky.
