Why would a better lens have to cost $200 less

(OTOH 24-105L can be had for essentially new as kits or broken from kits for like $650 these days at times, a lot less than your implied 24-105L price)

Exactly.

It's absurd that the 24-70 f4L is more expensive than the excellent 24-105L. Insulting actually.

It's insulting that an improved version of a mediocre lens costs more?

It's more troublesome comparison may have been with the Tamron 24-70 VC not the Canon 24-105L.

I find the 2 versions of the 24-105L I have used have both been sharp at close focus distances, but for distance scenes it lacks that biting sharpness that all Canon primes and 70-200 f/2.8II/f.4 IS have. That kinda makes it not too useful for landscapes for me

Yes, and the edges are troublesome near 24mm on FF (yes, even at f/8-f/10) and it has a lot more distortion there than the new version and probably lots more LoCA (it certainly had more LoCa than the 24 1.4 II and lots more than the 24-70 II). I mean for the price it can be had for now, it's not bad at all considering the IS and the range and AF speed, but those are other matters.

To be fair I haven't tried the 24-70 f/4 IS, but from what I read I'd be shocked if it didn't look better near 24mm, which is a very critical focal length for many on FF.

Yes the 24-70 f4 noticably better at 24mm-35mm than the tamron. Compared to Tamron it was an easy choice for me.
1. Canon is MUCH faster to aquire focus and to engage stabilization.
2. Tamron has more pronounced distortion at 24mm.
3. Tamron shows more vingetting even when stopped down to f4.
4. Both Tamrons I used required significant micro adjust to bring them in and I was never quite confident with the AF accuracy.

Twisted, a coupla landscapes or whatever with the 24-70 and that 6D would greatly contribute to this thread

I don't know, I had the Tamron and couldn't live without the Canon 24-70 2.8 II. Now with the difference I am seeing I think I should have kept the Tamron. I really don't think the 24-70 F4 Canon can hold up to the Tamron 24-70 VC assuming good samples. Of course I could be wrong.

Exactly... Canon knew this to begin with. These games they're playing with pricing do nothing but screw over early adopters. I'd be really upset had I already bought this lens.

Well being screwed over if you're an early adopter is not unique to Canon. I expect a small premium, but launching at nearly $1500 was just insane. Look at that amazing Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 launching at $799, hell Canon would have wanted at least $2K.

As far as as can tell the $1,299 price is only being offered at B&H Photo, so this could be only a temporary drop.

They play this game every time. The price on release is always sky high... then it slowly ticks down over the course of 6-18 months. They know the people who buy them first are willing to pay the most. After those people have bought one, they bring down the price to bring in more buyers... then after another 6-18 months it happens again.

I'm tired of this game personally... I'm going to adopt a policy of not buying anything Canon releases until it's been on the market for a year.

That's the best normal advice for any consumer product as steady as lenses. Let them fix the bugs and normalize the price first- let someone else pay the early adopter's fee.

To be honest, while I like the macro feature, it shouldn't have shipped with the lens if image quality was compromised versus the new 24-70/L II.

Having the same image quality with IS but a stop slower would have made this lens 'perfect'. Canon's sure going out of their way to sell Tamrons!

Same opinion here. And of course at a price arount $ 1000. Like we have it with 70-200 2.8 L IS / 4.0 L IS (Yes I know the 24-70 II lacks IS - great failure imo).

Instead of that Macro gimmick, Canon should have looked for better IQ at 50mm, too.

The pricing of this lens made me so mad when announced, but now I couldn't be happier. Made the decision to switch to Nikon so much easier.

If I had to do it over again, I'd be shooting Nikon too. But that's not a lens thing; both Canon and Nikon make some amazing lenses. I'd do it cause Sony's crop sensors are significantly more tolerable.

Am I missing something? Why is there such a price difference between this lens and the 24-70 2.8 II? For one stop faster in speed? When this has IS and makes up for four stops because of it? I don't get it really? Is there a direct comparison between the two lenses?

Yes, you are. You always pay severely for one stop increase in light gathering. If you think 24-70 difference is high, try this:

300f2.8L IS II $6799, 300 f4L IS $1349
200 f2L IS $5999, 200 f2.8L II $769
70-200 f2.8L IS II $2199, 70-200 f4L IS $1149
35mm f1.4L $1479, 35mm f2 $289

The tamron did do quite well on that DPR test. I actually trust DPR for lens tests more than TDP (which, in particular, always seems to get appalling results out of Tamron lenses). It would be hard to imagine the 24-70 f/4 IS doing better than the tamron going by DPR, otherwise it would do better than the 24-70 II.

At f/2.8 the 24-70 II seems to beat the Tamron and near center frame at many apertures (especially the longer you go), but interestingly for far edges and corners it seems to actually peak out a touch lower in some cases, of course some can be copy variation.

And then there are real world field curvature effects, which seem to be a bit odd with the 24-70 II once you start going above 45mm in particular.

IS is not that expensive these days. Heck if you can get IS in a kit lens that costs well under $200, it's not a big component of cost. I know thee are different levels of IS, but it's mature technology and has been greatly simplified and improved since introduction. In any other sector, this benefit would have been passed on to the consumer, but the lens makers like to still make out it's some super premium exotic technology and as the lens gets more expensive, the price of the IS seems to scale in price too.
