p.1 #1 · X100S B&W capability?

Just passing thoughts.

I use my hi-matic pretty much exclusively as B&W. 85% at small apertures too. I like HP5 for its smooth tones, edge of grain, ease of use. I wonder if any X100S users have any opinions on how this camera fairs for b&w s through RAW? I like the b&ws I can create with my ff dslr, but previously from aps-c I've found the tonality very flat and lacking... These were older cameras of course, but I have to ask.

Thanks,
Richard

Here are a couple with the x100s. Last one is x100:

Those are really nice. Are you using Silver EfEx?

The fujis are fantastic for B&W, because of the nice tonality of the files.

Thanks Ian . Do you find clipping an issue with the xtrans? I have a friend who uses xpro1 and says highlights can be a problem... Obviously not something I want if I'm looking for rich tones. Do you dial in some minus exp compensation by default? Does it handle lifting exposure in post well?

Here are some of my B&W shots from the X-E1 (same sensor optically):

Highlights really aren't a problem. Great dynamic range and ability to recover the highlights.

Down the Alley is really, really nice. ONe of the best B&W's I've seen on this site. I would buy a small print of that.

I find clipping no problem even in JPGs because the EVF allows you to see exactly what you will get an the +/- thumbwheel means you just dial in the correction so it's perfect. No more guessing/chimping.

Maybe someone else can chime in but it personally just reminds me of my solo meanderings through small towns in central Europe. The composition and tonality is also just to my taste as well.

Is there something about these Fuji sensors that make them uniquely better for B&W?

Some great shots, I love that 'down the alley' one. Really great depth & feel about it.

I have some images I will be converting to B&W from this cam, but not got to them just yet.

Do you guys shoot colour, and convert only, or shoot in B&W to get a better feel for it in cam?

I don't know why, but B&W is one area where I feel the X-E1 (similar sensor to 100s) beats my 5D2 + 35L-- every time.

I prefer the depth of 5d2 color shots over X-E1 color shots. But I've never had a camera that does B&W (converted, that is, not shot in-camera as B&W) so well.
