Has anyone played around with one of these?

Good article on it from lensrentals:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/06/sigma-optimization-pro-and-usb-dock

Here is a quick video:
http://vimeo.com/64665246

Apparently it lets you connect any lens you have via usb and update firmware directly as well as adjust focusing at various distances and focal lengths.

Sadly this device only works with newer lenses. I know my new 35mm 1.4 has focus issues at various distances so this might be good alternative to having to deal with shipping it into sigma.

I like the idea, but I wanted to see if anyone else here has used one before.

Thanks!

So far the images that I have seen from the new 35 1.4 that are in focus are impressively sharp. But I wonder why you "like the idea" of buying a lens that needs software and firmware to work. I happen to "like the idea" that whenever I put one of my Nikkors on they just work. Priceless

You think there is no software-firmware in your Nikon lenses? Wrong.

None that I have to adjust to get to work on a Nikon body.

well look at it from the other end. the last FW from Nikon and I quote:

"•Support for the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR has been added."

so it looks like the cost of the 800 to work properly on the Nikon bodies, as this was across the board, was a firmware upgrade but just done in the camera body.

we all know that 3rd party makers do not have access to the camera firmware so they do what they need in the tube of glass in the front.

in the end its pretty much equals out and is not so "priceless"

sigma has set limitations on their newer lenses as to what can be controlled by the user on a per lens product basis. all what can be done to/with the 120-300 cannot be also done to the 17-70. you do not need to invest in this operation to use their lenses as is. it is merely an option.

You're right. No Nikon lens needs autofocus adjustment. And none of them need different AF-adjust values at different focal lengths.

All of the people on this forum who have posted differently are simply lying.

then there's that little bit of microadjust control in the Nikon body.

the world is just full of perfection isn't it?
