There are several color variations of copperheads varying in shades of reds and browns and varying by region. Northern is much different than Southern. There is also, what is called a Broad Band. All of these are Agkistrodon contortrix. The 5 subspecies that will determine the varying colors are: A. c. contortrix (southern), A. c. laticinctus (broad band), A. c. mokasen (northern), A. c. phaeogaster (osage), A. c. pictigaster (trans pecos)
