p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What lenses have you owned?

I was just thinking about how my lens kit has evolved over the years. Lenses have come and gone. Zooms are versatile but have never been able to maintain their foothold in my bag. I started with manual, AIS lenses when I got my F4 and a couple of those are still hanging on. My all-time favorite lens is the Micro 105/2.8 AIS which is versatile and produces great images. I've had the Sigma 85/1.4 for almost a year now but I think it's headed for the chopping block as the 105 can fill its shoes nicely. My next lens purchase may be a Zeiss 21/2.8...but I also just acquired a m43 kit so I'll have to see if it can replace my D700.

Anyway, the Nikon mount lenses I currently own: Micro-Nikkor 105/2.8 AIS, Nikon 50/1.4 AIS, Zeiss 25/2, Sigma 85/1.4.

And the lenses I have previously owned and sold/traded: Nikon DX 35/1.8 AFS, Nikon 35/2 AFD, Nikon 20/2.8 AFD, NIkon DX 16-85/3.5-5.6 (great DX zoom), Nikon 80-200/2.8 AFD (two ring version), Nikon 28/3.5 PC, Nikon 400/5.6 AIS, Nikon 24-70/2.8 AFS, Nikon 35-70/2.8 AF, Nikon 28/1.4 AFD (owned two different ones...wonderful lens), Nikon DX 12-24/4 AFS, Nikon DX 18-55/3.5-5.6 AFS (non VR).

The only lens that I always regret selling is the 28/1.4. Who knows...maybe #3 will be in my future at some point if the m43 experiment doesn't work out.

So what Nikon mount lenses have you owned? What do you own now? What are your favorites? Which do you regret selling?

Too many to list but these are my favourites :-

Pentax 77 Ltd, Pentax 43 Ltd, Cosina 55/1.2, Pentax DA*300, Contax Zeiss 85/1.4, Contax Zeiss 28/2.8, Zeiss 21/2.8, Zeiss 35/2, Nikkor 300/2.8 VRII, Sigma 120-300/2.8, Sigma 50/1.4.

The only lenses I've regretted selling are the first 3 in the list - but then after switching to Nikon there was not much option !

I have only a rough idea at my age. I think it is at least 70 interchangeable lenses altogether, but less than 100. The oldest ones were for the Argus C3, if anyone remembers that system. The first Nikkor I had was the 50/2 with the prongs. You had to set the aperture to 5.6 and then back and forth to set the minimum aperture on the body.

Same here, and no kidding. Among current FX Nikon lenses with AF, I have not owned the 20/2.8, 28/1.8, 200-400, 400/2.8 and 600/4.

Quite a few of the lenses I'd list would have an EF in front of them and those belong on a different forum...

When I first began experimenting with Nikon by purchasing a D700 three and a half years ago, I decided I wouldn't try to duplicate my Canon kit, which was filled with professional lenses. I made that decision in part because the Nikon equivalents of the lenses in my Canon kit were MUCH more expensive and I wasn't certain in the beginning whether I'd ultimately sell my Canon gear and make a permanent switch. I bought lenses that had decent reputations, like the 28-105D, 18-35D, 85 f/1.8D, 35 f/2D, 70-210D with one serious purchase in the 28-70 f/2.8 AF-s. I'd loved that lens with Canon and couldn't quite imagine I'd get along without it. I rather quickly upgraded the 85, buying the 85 f/1.4D.

But along the way I noted the signature lines that then appeared on FM and saw many folks with the 105 f/2.5 AI-s, It made me curious enough that I bought a copy, delighted as well as surprised to buy a lens for less than two hundred dollars after spending well over a thousand dollars MANY times.

The rest is history. I sold all the AF lenses except the Beast and the Cream Machine, picked up a 50 f/1.8 AF AND began a serious exploration of Nikon's amazing MF lens collection. At the moment I have 35 MF Nikkors, including converted pre-AI, AI and AI-s lenses. There are many more I could buy but I'm pretty content shooting between 16mm and 400mm with light weight lenses I can hand hold. I don't tend to sell MF lenses.

I'm always amazed at how many options there are for us as we build and re-build our kits. I've coined the phrase "kit building is forever" that has a bit of traction in the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread because that is what most of us are doing. It is great fun!

I'm not big on lenses

Owned:
105mm f/2.8 macro AF-D – decent but didn’t like the focal length for people. Slow to focus. Amazing value for money used.
85mm f/1.4 AF-D – sharp in the centre but that is about it. CA, flared easily, annoying lens hood. Great bokeh. Gladly replaced once sigma 85mm came out
35-70mm 2.8 AF-D – Not super sharp, flares like mad. Kept it for location scouting and ebay pictures (it has a weird macro ability)

Own:
70-200mm 2.8 VRII - big, heavy but fast and flexible
Sigma 85mm 1.4 - excellent in almost all respects but large
50mm AF-S 1.8 G - plastic fantastic but a fairly solid performer. Please make a great 50mm nikon.

I'm pleased to say I've never sold a lense. One perished in an accident and one was taken back to the store within a few days because it was just a horrible model and I exchanged it for something else.

The current favorites are the 50mm f/1.8 afs and the 24mm f/1.4 afs

There's plenty others, but these get the most attention these days.

So back to Nikon and your question

Now, I think I have stuff I will keep for a bit, 50 AFS, 85 AFS, 85 macro, 24-85, 18-200, 70-200 F4, and 80-400

Thanks for all the replies. It's interesting to see how many lenses some of you have owned. However, the intention, on my part, was to only list Nikon mount lenses since this is...after all...a Nikon forum. Should have been more clear on that front...I did edit the original post to reflect that. No big deal.
