Check out lensrentals test They run pretty true.
As far using a tc 1.4 THe lens performs nicely and focus is still fast and accurate.

This is definitely not true on close-up objects. Anything within ~75', the 200-400mm is the sharpest lens I've used. I compared it back-to-back with the 80-400mm.

I'm also not sure that the autofocus on the 80-400mm beats it. That's just subjective, as my 200-400mm is now sold, but the 80-400mm doesn't feel quite as quick.

The new lens definitely took a bite out of the used market for the 200-400mm, though, dropping the average price by several hundred dollars.

Ditto. I know the 80-400 is optically excellent but it may be OTT to describe it as superior to the amazing 200-400.

Here's a shot I took with the 200-400 (scroll down to near the end) at 20m in very dim light - AF was superb and locked on everything immediately and without hesitation :

Yikes! Do you think I posed the diamondback? First there was the moment of discovery, about 2 feet from my foot! After I was done jumping 10 feet up, then I got my gear and started shooting. Those opportunities don't happen every day.

For sure! I stumbled across one sunning itself on the rocks... I didn't bother to stick around to find out how he was doing....

I rented the 80-400 for a week to cover a bicycle race and to try out in my yard around my ponds. There are lots of critters in and around the ponds. I used it with a monopod, a tripod and hand held it. It performed ~okay~ but I have to say I was not impressed enough to buy it. It's not even on my list of wants. i didnt think it was all that sharp, especialy on distant object. i did get a few outstanding shots of the bicycle racers in their "cockpits" when they were in the 40-50 ft range. Those shots were very nice but I used my 70-200 VRII in similar shots and they, to me, were better or very close. My cameras are a D800 and D700.
I really wanted to like this lens but it just didn't do it for me. I actually compared my 200/f2 with a 1.7x and 2.0x xconverters pics of a few ducks to the 80-400 and similar duck shots. I liked the 200mm better.

You liked the constant f/2.8 lens @ half the focal range/length, and the $6,000 6.5 lb. prime, better than the 5x variable aperture zoom?

You don't say...

When put like that I guess it sounds mucked up....fair enough.....but the 200 is heavy, and I hoped that the 80-400 being the same size practically as the 70-200 would suffice for better portability over a longer focal range. I probably had my expectations too high. I think it's a very good lens but felt the long end would fare better at reader distances. There's some very good pics represented here in this thread so it obviously works well.

I finally received my 80-400 f4.5-5.6 ED VR today after a lot of dickering around by various camera stores. So far with some limited time with it at the zoo this afternoon, this lens is the "ants pants".

Most of these are shot wide open @ f5.6 (some f8) and at ISO6400 due to the dull, gloomy, wet day here in winter time Sydney at Taronga zoo. The lion shots were taken through glass as well! Just shots to test how good it is.

I see that that Nasim Mansurov (Photography Life) has now posted his review of the new 80-400mm lens. No surprises there for those that have owned or own the lens. He did bring up one thing I'd noticed, the occasional chattering when auto focusing. Still, except for price, a decent lens.
