The original thread seems to have died. From yesterday, having all that zoom range works out nicely.

Yes, you probably mean the old AF-D lens, the new one is AF-S and has really amazing glass in it for the price.
Nice Images btw, but why don't you post something in the old threat to get in on page 1?

It's just a snapshot, I just thought I'd post an example of how the 1.4x TC performs on this lens. I've been really pleased with how it performs on a complex, small-aperture zoom like this.

If anyone is considering it, I would not hesitate. Yes, it's f/8 but the sharpness is really decent:

Although I don't think I'd use a TC with the 80-400G, that's quite good.

Yikes! Do you think I posed the diamondback? First there was the moment of discovery, about 2 feet from my foot! After I was done jumping 10 feet up, then I got my gear and started shooting. Those opportunities don't happen every day.

amazing images ...... I think Nikon definitely produced a nice lens finally in this range. Although I am pretty happy with my 200-400 VRI on the D7100 - enough that I wouldn't sell it for the 80-400

As long as you are happy with your 200-400 there is no reason to change unless you want something lighter and smaller

But, for anyone who was thinking about the 200-400, this new 80-400 has really rendered the 200-400 just about obsolete as optically, the new 80-400 is at least as good and actually better on distant objects.

Autofocus and VR are also faster and better on the new 80-400.

This is definitely not true on close-up objects. Anything within ~75', the 200-400mm is the sharpest lens I've used. I compared it back-to-back with the 80-400mm.

I'm also not sure that the autofocus on the 80-400mm beats it. That's just subjective, as my 200-400mm is now sold, but the 80-400mm doesn't feel quite as quick.

The new lens definitely took a bite out of the used market for the 200-400mm, though, dropping the average price by several hundred dollars.

Thanks Colin, I appreciate that comment coming from you ... I always seem to be wrestling with composition. I find composition easy if you like tight framing, but its not so easy if you like to include some environment like I do.

Best....
