Hi there
I bought a 1D X few days ago.

I went to the menu and fonctions.
I made the same set-up as the one in my Mark IV.
I went to an event today
I did work with a flash (580EX II on tripod + PW remote on camera)
The camera was in Manuel Mode.
Was working on ETTL-II mode on flash

I've tried to make some adjustments on the camera.
When I tried to change the speed, the aperture was changing as well !!!

Do I have to make some settings on the X?

I'm also looking for infos for best settings for sports shooting with the 1D X

thank you

Jean-Yves

I think what PasiM is saying is don't use "manual mode".

Good luck with your 1Dx.

I also upgraded from an IV to an X. At a guess you were inadvertently in P-mode. In that mode, both the aperture and shutter speed will change so that the exposure is constant.

Manual mode works as expected except that you can also use auto ISO if you like.

If you were actually in manual, the aperture would NOT change when you change the speed. Check the mode dial. And read your manual.

Hmmm. Could you please check the exif data of your photos to see whether you were really in Manuel Mode?

Were you using auto ISO in M mode? 1DX is a completely different beast and it will take some time to get used to the menu especially tracking things.

Hey guys thanks for the comments.
I just verified and I was in Manual Mode for all the pictures I took.

I did some testings this morning.
The camara works fine in Manual Mode
the problem occurs when I add a PW on camera to trigger a flash

any ideas why?

There seems to be some issue with pw and 1D X:

Pw firmware notes

"Manual power control only – No TTL. TTL is not currently available when using the 1D X, 6D, or T4i with a MiniTT1 or FlexTT5. "

I don't know the name of the setting, but there is some override setting that does change aperture. It might be related to ISO override or something. Search for the word override in the e-manual PDF.

1DX support ETTL the problem is with the pocket wizard.
I bought the new flash system from Canon and it works great.

Safety shift is what I think you are referring to. It will change aperture or shutter speed if it detects you will over or under expose with your current settings. For example, shooting wide open with an f/1.4 lens on a sunny day, if 1/8000 isn't fast enough to prevent overexposure, it will change aperture.

Further you can have safety shift for aperture/shutter or ISO.

That was my first thought too, but Safety Shift only works with Av and Tv, not Manuel Mode according to the user manual.

thanks again Stoffer.
Yep seems like we can't indeed shoot on ETTL mode.

does anyone has a link to a video tutorial (youtube) about
using the 1 D X with Canon speedlights?
