p.1 #1 · Got the itch to get a new camera body.

Got some money saved up and I'm thinking about selling my D3, D300s, 300/4 and 150/2.8 for a D4 and would keep my D700.

Or would it be wise to see if a D400 comes out?

Just in case you are wondering, I shoot anything that catches my eye in nature.

Lets see - you won't miss the D3, D300s. Of all lenses I miss it is the 300 F4. I also love my new 105 macro.

What other lenses do you have? Assuming you still carry some other lenses I'd go for it. The D4 is awesome. It does it all. Though I would like a D800e for landscapes (smaller body, more MP's)

I've got the 24-120/4 VR, 80-400 VRII AF-S and thinking about getting the Sigma 300-800/5.6

Proudly not much, (maybe better video, DR, ISO??), Guess I just got the itch for something new.

One thing is retain more resale value.

If you hold onto a digital body too long, you lose any change of ever selling it again for more than $3.

Sell them while they're still hot, unless you can afford to buy and drive them into the ground.

Go for the D4

Rent the Sigma 300-800 before you buy. I had one.
The lens image quality is awesome, even at 1000 feet it performs well.
But, what a beast to lug around. It requires a stought TriPod and a Full Wimberly.
The huge front element is very vulnerable to beach sand and salt air,
so not so sure about surf photos.
Your AFS 80-400 VRII is much easier to deal with and more versatile too.

D3s? Or do you need more MP? I would do D3s and some glass AND save some dough

My vote is to sell all of it including the D700

Pick up:
D800E
D7100

Skip on the D4 unless you plan on shooting in some sketchy weather conditions or need the sustained fps.

I have no interest in a D800/E or D7100. The only DX camera I'll buy is if a D400 comes out. The D800 is just to slow and to many MP's for me. If it had 20MP's or even 24MP's and it had 8fps with the grip then I'd get that.

A little more MP's would be nice.

If I didn't have a D3 already, then I'd go for a D3s. But I think the upgrade from a D3 to D4 is better option.

Yeah the 300-800 is a beast for sure. I've looked at it up close and talked to some guys that have it and love it. I have a heavy duty tripod and head already. Yes, the 80-400 is much easier and would be used for hikes and fly overs at the Eagle spots I visit, but some more FL is needed at times and the 300-800 seems it would be the best option FL wise and the price is great for what you get over the more costly 500, 600 and 800 primes.

Maybe I'll rent it this up coming Eagle season.

There's something about shooting a D4 that just brings a big smile to your face, it's just the complete package. I'm sure the D3-D3s owners feel the same but after owning (own) the high MP bodies like the 600, 800, 7100 I wouldn't want to go much with less MP (if any) then the 16 of the D4. I say go for it! And I look forward to seeing your results with the Sigma if you decide to get it.

I used my 300-800 for the WidowMaker MotorCycle HillClimb until it got too costly to cover the Event anymore.
With a Full Wimberly, I was able to cover the entire 1,000 foot diagonal run from across the hill..
In the three most difficult conditions: moisture in the air, shooting into the Sun, and darkness,
It produced images superior to my 200-400.
Only on the short hill (much closer) was the Nikkor better.
And to mention your 80-400 we used one primarily to shoot the riders coming up the 300ft hills from above the top,
and sometimes to cover two hills at a time from between while hand held.

The Sigma could be very good for capturing images of soaring or nesting Eagles.
I would set it up as close as possible to a roost and also shoot them flying above.
Be sure to get one with a carry bag.
If I were you, I would get a D800e to hang from it.
You could crop to 1/4 of the image and still print a poster.

The D4 doesn't fully meet the criteria you just mentioned. Going from the D3 then the D3s and now the D4, I can tell you that the resolution bump isn't really much of a reason to upgrade, but more about ergonomics.

Guess you're waiting for a d300s successor.

Good luck.

Never said I had a D3s. Not sure where you go that.

The D4 certainly will scratch that itch. Great camera, I love it. The, some-day-maybe, D400 wouldn't interest me due to its DX format. But that me. Good luck.

David - it sounds to me like you've already made up your mind. It's definitely NAS, and the only cure is to buy the D4 already. Skip the D3s - you will stay up all night, every night because the D4 is taunting you. You know you want it.. come on now... 11 fps, oh that new tech, 16.2 MP, AMAZING DR, buttons that light up, amazing video, BETTER ERGONOMICS, improved AF, ENDLESS buffer, oh and it's a freakin D4 for cryin out loud! There is nothing above it. Nothing. You know you want it.

by the way, I bought one yesterday don't wanna look at my wallet but I'm sure when it gets here I will be but for now I'm still

I always tell myself: Buy the good stuff, and you only cry once.

STAPH it!!!
Now it's itching here too!

Fuck it, my D800e is the cam I need...
...

But 11fps and best high iso ever and ergonomics and backlit buttons..
Oooooo
