Well they just need to introduce a 14-24/28 f/2.8(4)L that can rival the Nikon. I'd be happy with a 16-35 mk III that was optimised for landscape use rather than street use.

Why would an 18mm f/2.8 cost anywhere near $2500?

Maybe if it was an 18mm f/2.0L, but not if it was simply a good performing, non-L, f/2.8 lens.

This is actually a lens I'd really like. Something small, with controlled distortion, at f/2.8. Snub-nosed. Sub $1K, probably more in the range of the 24 f/2.8 IS price range-- if we assume the lack of IS helps balance the increased cost of the wider FL.

The older Canon 20mm f/2.8 is readily available in the $450 to $550 price range. I don't think the jump down to 18mm would cost that much more-- better manufacturing technologies and know-how should be plenty to balance the increased cost from the FL difference at this range. Then add in Canon's huge markup on new lenses-- and I could see an 18mm f/2.8, non-L with good performance in the $899 list price range. Give it a year, and I bet you'd see it selling for $600.

He likes to have a lens between the 14L and 24L lenses. Those lenses are 5-6 years old and cost $ 2359 and $ 1759 at B&H. And a lot more in UK where he lives. And you belive a new 18/2,8 will be sub $ 1k with Canon lens prices recently

When he compare with 14L and 24L we have to assume he is talking about an L lens of course. And he even wrote a 18L or 20L in his original post

Yes Lars, I would like an L prime lens to fill that gap. I also know it won't be cheap, but I would hope that it would probably be priced around £1500 on the street after the price drops down from its RRP. If so, I would still be interested in such a lens.

When I carry the 24-70 and the 16-35, the 16-35 doesn't get much use unless I really want to go ultra wide. A lighter, smaller 16mm or 17mm prime with AF will be the most welcome news for me.

To me, a prime should offer an advantage such as faster aperture or better IQ than the equivalent zoom. Or smaller size/lighter weight

The 17mm TSE already has the 'better IQ' part covered - anyone who demands the best edge-to-edge sharpness and distortion performance will choose the TSE

Any new prime would need to be faster than f/2.8 to justify it's place in the lineup, unless Canon decides to continue it's recent trend of updating wide primes to add IS.
- I think the new 24 and 28mm IS primes are currently overpriced, I think sales have been pretty slow

Yes £ 1500 is rather close to $ 2500

100% agree! 14 is too wide for me most of the time, and I would love a light fast (F2 or F2.8) L prime in the 16-19mm range that performs in-line with my Tokina 16-28 on distortion and sharpness while keeping the special canon look. Oh and it should take filters

I can see that lens being expensive.

I'm probably one of the few Wedding photographers / gearheads who has both the 14LII and the 24LII

In a Wedding environment the 14LII would be used for wide angle scenes of the venue and that's about it. Other than those, I would probably only use it for group photos or environmental portraits where 24mm is too tight

Basically, beside the wide angle scenes, the 14LII is only used when the 24LII isn't wide enough

Prior to getting the 24LII, my gap was from the 14LII to the 35L - that was painful.

For formals of large family groups, I would mount a 14LII on one camera, and 35L on the other, and take a few shots on each camera so there were 2 "looks" for the couple. Now I just go 24LII and 35L

So yeah, Canon we need a 14-24G

Although I would still have to carry the same amount of lenses
