i am thinking of getting a nikon 16-85vr as a general purpose zoom. has anyone compared this lens to the 18-105vr?

To me, the 16MM wide end means little. The 85MM long end is far too short. I would much rather the 18-105 or even 18-135. I finally got the 18-135.

You can't really gone wrong with either. As entry level lenses they are pretty similar. I'd opt for the 18-105 just for the extra reach as runamuch mentioned.

Loved my 16-85 when I shot DX - I'm a wide guy so the 16mm was important to me as 18mm is just not wide enough for a walk-around zoom (again for my shooting style).

My walk-around is the much-maligned 18-200 VRII. I must have gotten a great copy - it has been very reasonably sharp on my D90 and D300s and has been terrific when I'm on vacation, etc.

My light walk-around kit when I'm traveling is the 18-200 and the 35mm f/1.8G. The next thing I add is the Tokina 11-16.

I had the 16-85, and never found the zoom range lacking. IQ was quite good on my D7000, and when paired with the 35 1.8g, makes a great travel kit. I've handled the 18-105, and it felt very cheap in comparison.
