p.1 #1 · Do you hesitate to show your "other work?"

So i'm wondering who here shoots other stuff besides weddings/portraits, but more importantly, does/does not showcase that work on your website??

For instance, i've shot mountain biking for years, and have been shooting some skateboard stuff recently for a local magazine...always loved shooting action sports, but decided i shouldnt showcase it on my website, so i put it under "personal work" so as to not let people think i'm a "jack of all trades, master of none", but that i still specialize in weddings...i know some people here shoot commercial stuff too, i think i remember seeing some commercial stuff on Tony Hoffers blog one time...

So i'm wondering what your take is on mixing business with pleasure...separate sites?? Same site?? Let clients know what you like to shoot when you're not shooting weddings??

I just recently made a separate site for my commercial stuff that might put off brides and vice versa.

I've been wondering this too, but my situation is a little different.

I have a ton of built up personal work from various travels, which I'm planning to post as a way to encourage destination bookings.

From what I've seen, if done correctly it can show that the photographer is a real person too that has interests (and it shows some extra competence and variety). So long as it's not too often, I don't see it being detrimental, but I'm sure that will depend on what the work is and what your target clients are turned off/on by.

Only if you have a massive site full of sections with other disciplines so the bride may think you are not a specialized wedding photographer but putting a little bit of this and a little bit of that wont hurt I think.

our site has mostly kids and weddings, since we mainly shoot that. I have a few model shots here and there, a few advertising things and some products. It helps show the bride that I can do more than just weddings and that I can go outside of my element and still make great stuff happen.

My portfolio is my journalism work and all.of my wedding stuff is in my blog scattered among various posts. It can be annoying when applying for 2nd shooting assignments to hear "Where's your wedding stuff?" But weddings aren't my specialty, they're just something I do to mix things up every so often. Weddings are a lot easier in comparison. Not to sound like it's nothing, weddings have their own difficulties but it's easier to photograph people who want their picture taken and that you're spending a whole day with and know what's going to happen each step of the day as opposed to photojournalism where people sometimes don't want their picture taken, if you're doing a portrait for a feature you have like 30 minutes before you have to leave for the next assignment, you never know what people are going to do moment to moment, and replace that guest with a camera who stands right in.front of you with a cop with a badge and gun who says he's going to arrest you of you step any closer to what you want to photograph and if you don't get any closer it's your editor who is going to yell at you, and if you disappoint them they can fire you. I love what I do but weddings really are a more relaxed environment.

I think it depends on what it is and probably also how you market yourself ie. if the other work is there to actively market yourself to get non-wedding jobs or to support your brand showing what else you are drawn to and a bit more about you. If you are going to have it up you need to have a solid reason why you do for your wedding work rather than just being lazy not building two sites and also have it take a back seat.

I have not done a survey but from what I see brides only care about weddings and babies. I think you can mix wedding, family and babies. Heavy commercial shots would not fit and I can guarantee my corporate clients don't want to see weddings. I know this because many tell me the reason they called is I show business images and not a lot of other stuff.

As a mountain biker, I request you post some of your work. I haven't gotten to shoot that in years, but that's where my love of photography actually started.

I shoot auto shows, and cars for my friends. I did a little sports back in the day.

Sometimes I'll blog or facebook a little personal work, under the headline "Personal" or something, just to separate it. I like to let my clients know who I am, what I'm all about, and let them into my life.

That would be my guess. I don't think those dirt bike racing photos are gonna help you land that wedding.

I resisted not showcasing "my other work" on my site for some time. I saw almost immediate SEO benefit when I narrowed the focus to wedding and portrait photography. I have some of my fine art "fans" ask me where my other stuff went some times, but I just provide a link that doesn't directly show on my top/main pages.

I go through this in my head all the time. I'm mainly a documentary family photographer, and am not sure how prominently I should present my wedding work (which isn't much) or other random stuff (portraits, street, other events).

On one hand I like to be seen as a "specialist" on the other I think some clients want to see that I have other non-client specific work (fine art) that I do.

I know a successful wedding photog who also shows landscapes. He actually was doing landscapes before the wedding work.

Lot of good opinions here....i'm getting more commercial stuff now that i could ALMOST start another site, but not quite yet.....i think for now, for the volume of inquiries and work i get, i think the "personal work" section is doing ok, not hurting me too much.....

As for my mtb stuff, Prettym1k3, there's a few on my website under personal work, those are prob some of the better images i have....i haven't had a chance to shoot riding stuff in prob about 2 years now....plus, the riding in Florida sucks lol....

diggler - the food i'm taking photos of - is stuff I make myself, so it's really easy to use all natural light. I have a one legged antique table on my back porch that is perfect for this, only problem is it's one legged and I have to prop it up on something. looking for that perfect surface is an ongoing project. on the occasional night time photo, I have a lowel ego light. it's quick and easy.

Do you generally want shallow depth of field or deep depth of field with food?

it depends on the food...when I am trying to get one main photo for the gridded website design I use - I just really look for the most attractive ones - to me. you are welcome to take a look if you like - not everything actually has a recipe on there (which is how it is supposed to work).
