Nice Design and layout as usual...I like the second one better, don't know how much I like the bw image in the first one.
I agree. Parent wanted headshot in B/W. Also the headshot was shot tight with three out of four cut edges. Not much flexibility for placement within the poster. It gets married to that corner unfortunately. I usually like a head and eyes leading in to the poster.
What do parents know lol As long as they are happy, that's all that matters.

I like the 2nd one over the first, all because of the B/W shot, but not for what it is. his head seams to be floating on his neck cause his jersey blends in to much. I think with a tone down in the neck area and bringing the jersey shoulder area up a little I would like the 1st a lot more. Both are jam up posters and I like the B/W more except for the mention.
Good stuff, Paul- it's #2 for me. I like how you pulled the player number out from behind the name banner. Background is working well, too. Only (really) minor nit is the tightness of the mat around the main image in #2.
Very nice! I agree that the face in the first should be facing into the page. Looking off to the right just sends the viewer's eye awkwardly sliding off the page. I suspect that's more of the reason behind the cooler reactions to it, rather than the "floating head" impression.
Paul,
Wondering if you would share your thought process... I would not have thought that you would have kept the headshot since its off center and cut off. What made you keep it in the first place?
Thanks,
Guy

I have no idea. I don't remember taking it, but I guess it was the only one I had of him tight like that and you never know what will sell. Usually if its tight, in focus, and has a face, it gets kept because you never know what a parent wants. The proof was approved today so go figure.
Maybe because it sells? lol. I often tell people I got the equivalent of my masters in sports photography from this forum, but I will admit it took me a while to unlearn some of the things I learned here. Rules are made to be broken and there is no right or wrong... I kind of like the crop, its different. And obviously, so does the parent. Nice work Paul.
I do have a question for you though. Do you cut out the images yourself or do you use a plugin? I think onOne software has a masking tool that automates pulling things out of images, but I haven't tried it. My masks are seldom this clean...
