p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D800 VR strategy

After about a month with my D800, I am pretty satisfied with what I am doing. A key to that was setting a minimum shutter of 1/125 in the auto iso. Swallowed my ego. Got sharper shots.

I now have two VR lenses, the Nikon 105 and the Tamron 70-300. I am pretty sure I can get two stops from these, maybe more.

So how would I set up the camera to temporarily override the minimum shutter, then returning it to 1/125 for my other lenses? Is there a way to avoid having to go to the menu, etc whenever I go from VR to regular lenses?

Thanks.

I was going to suggest putting the min shutter speed setting as the top item in "My Menu" and then configure the Fn button to access it but unfortunately the D800 firmware doesn't support that option in "My Menu". The only other suggestion that comes to mind is using Auto ISO in Manual Exposure Mode.

Hmmm. Does auto iso work in manual exposure mode? If you set the shutter and the aperture manually, hmmm...

What are VR lenses? Been shooting Canon and not familiar with Nikon anymore but considering the Nikon D800e.

Vibration Reduction lenses. Similar to IS lenses.

I don’t know how much experience you have with photography so excuse me for assuming too much, but I would recommend avoiding Auto ISO entirely until you fully understand what the camera is trying to accomplish regarding metering and exposure. Like everything else in life, greater control equals less mystery.

Or, use Auto-ISO (set min S to 30) and shoot in Aperture priority. This way you are controlling the shutter speed and the camera is doing the rest. Then you can go low or keep it at a min 125. The other benefit of this setup is to force you to pay attention to the controls in the VF.

Shooting banks

That's what I'd recommend as well. Set up a "VR equipped lens" and "VR not equipped lens" shooting bank and you're golden. There's no way to have it change automatically as far as I know.

VR is comparable to Canon's IS.

What am I doing wrong? Out of 8 lenses one is VR and they all take great photos. I guess I won't worry about it and just shoot the darned 800 manual like always.

Great write up Harsha, thank you. I've got a quick question. In Aperature ModeI've noticed that once the max ISO is reached, the SS will go below the minimum setting. For example, I've set the Maximum ISO to 6400 and Minimum SS is set to 250s. When I start dimming the light, the ISO rises to 6400, but the SS speed also go below 250. Is this a normal behavior or did I missed a setting somewhere?

I believe that to be normal behavior. The reason being is aperture priority is set so that once the aperture is setup, the shutter speed automatically adjusts so as to capture what the camera believes to be proper exposure. When auto ISO is introduced, it automatically adjusts/raises ISO so as to provide, at the least, the minimum shutter speed required to achieve what the camera believes to be proper exposure. As you have set the maximum ISO to 6400, the camera will go no higher, but with the aperture you have set, when the camera is unable to provide proper exposure at your minimum shutter speed, it will have no choice but to compensate by falling below your set minimum shutter speed so as to maintain proper exposure.

Nice write-up, Harsha
Personally, I prefer A mode and Easy ISO. Worth mentioning...
VR is also activated on the newer bodies via the AF-ON button
Those who got used to a shutter 1/2 depress to engage will have
to deal with this latest (most unwelcome) development.

Hmmm - where does "newer" start. I'm assuming my vintage D300s doesn't do that?

I've been meaning to re-read my "Guide to the D300s" by Mr. Hogan anyway...

Correct, Lee.
D800/D800e/D4/D600/D7100 all will activate VR with AF-ON (AE-L/AF-L)

The D600 also activates VR with 1/2 shutter depress.
