Well, maybe not 15. You can buy a knockoff hood for $15:

http://www.amazon.com/Rainbowimaging-replaces-CANON-ES-52-Canon/dp/B008UX0B1W/ref=pd_sim_p_2

The official hood costs significantly more. Not sure why anybody would bother with such a tiny hood but if might make MF easier with a little more grip area.

p.1 #5 · DPR reviews EF 40/2.8 STM

I think the EF 40mm 2.8 STM is even better than this review concludes. Since it came out last summer, I have been recommending it for everyone with a FF Canon.

The actual measured focal length is 43mm

The perfect focal length for FF is 43.27mm (diagonal of the sensor)

It is very sharp, resolving 18mp on the 5D3 and 11mp on the 700D. This level of sharpness places it 13th on the list of current Canon EF lenses and 19th including all brand lenses for EOS. For any lens that is an amazing accomplishment, for a $150 lens it is insanely good.

Owned it for a few months ... didn't know it was electronic focus until this review.
"Insanely good" about nails it, Super35.

Where did you find the actual measured focal length?

I'm not arguing the ordering of that list, but it does look a tad incomplete... 70-200/2.8 IS II?

Hi John, you misunderstood. That list are the lenses that resolve 18MP on the 5D3. The 70-200/2.8 IS II is in a whole other class of Canon goodness. It resolves 21MP on the 5D3, thats why it is not on that list.

Resolution wise, the top three lenses on the 5D3 are indeed in rarefied air:
Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM - 22MP
Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM - 21MP
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM -21MP

DxOMark. Look at: measurements : distortion : profiles, graph of the measured real focal length.

For example, did you know that the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is actually an 83 to 189mm lens.

That I did misunderstand, thanks. Or rather, confused myself, but it's all the same .

Meaning it probably costs canon about 15 cents, not what it retails for that said, i have yet to miss having a hood with this lens

I got my 40mm almost by chance. I flew to London for a few days on route to my final holiday destination. While there I bought extra battery and cards and the guy behind the counter asked if I had seen the new lens. Needless to say I loved it and still do.

It's definitely a nice lens for the price, just like the 50 1.8 II. However, when I was able to upgrade to a 50 1.4, I did.

One of my favorite lenses on FF. Between the size, IQ and FL its just the perfect walk around lens, at least for me.

...upgrade to the 50/1.4 from the... what?

You'd have to pay me to use the 50/1.8 II over the 50/1.4, but the 40/2.8 is in a different class all it's own.

If you could afford a Canon body and only the 50/1.8 II or 40/2.8, the 40/2.8 is the better lens, all the way. Hell, it might even lock focus!

p.1 #18 · DPR reviews EF 40/2.8 STM

I'm no dpreview, but I posted a review of the 40mm stm on my blog in March ( http://bruceleventhal.blogspot.com/2013/03/canon-40mm-f28-stm-review.html ). I'm not a gear head or equipment reviewer, but I love the lens so much, that I wanted to add my thoughts to the discussion. DPReview definitely confirmed my observations... a best lens for the price that betters others that are farmoreexpensive. Nice to see Canon offer a bargain once in a while.

Regards, bruce

Bruce, that is nice review. I enjoyed reading it and I learned something new. I've never used the 40mm STM as a deep landscape lens at f/8 or f/11. I've used it on the 5D3 almost 100% wide open in street style casual photography. Since you have had such success I will try it now.

nah give us a break, how is not including a $1 part and then charging $35 for it on it's own more reasonable than DPR's complaint?
