I have a D700 on the way and no fx lens wider than 35mm to use with it. I was eyeing the Nikon 20mm in one variant or another, but I keep reading conflicting reviews of its sharpness / suitability for fx digital. Zooms, such as the 17-35 or 14-24, are not going to work for me because of the cost.

My requirements are for good sharpness in the corners by f5.6 or f8 at a cost of less than $400. Projected useage will be some small almount of landscape work as well as close-quarters interior shots of automobiles.

Any candidates?

For less than 400... it doesn't really exist. I would just save a bit more and get the tokina 16-28 for $600 used.

Have you considered the Samyang 14mm? It's an incredible lens at the price, $320 brand new. The only catch is that it is completely manual, focus/aperture.

If you don't need zoom or AF you may want to look into the Samyang 14 2.8:

and how it compares to the Nikon 14-24 and Zeiss 15:

It is superwide and certainly a budget lens but has excellent sharpness. It seems common problems include the focus range markings on the lens not corresponding to the actual focus distance and also reported problems of element decentering. If you are patient enough to get a good copy is looks great.

Other budget friendly lenses that would do fine on the D700 would be the MF Tokina 17 3.5, Nikkor 24 2.8 AIS and 28 2.8 AIS. The Nikkor 20 2.8 AIS is very sharp in the center and does very well for close focus. The corners are a bit weak though.

The new Nikon 18-35 AFS G looks to be a good 'budget' wide fx zoom. Though it is a bit above you price.

OK, thanks. Hadn't considered either the Tokina 16-28 or the Nikon 18-35. Will give the 24 AIS a look as well. The Samyang may also be an option if I can locate a good copy -- seems to be lots of sample variation in those if I read the comments correctly.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the copy variation on the Samyang 14mm. I think the copy thing is completely overrated and mostly user error when focusing. Most people aren't used to manual focus. I'm in the process of switching to Nikon, but my copy is sharper than all my Canon L lenses.

By f/5.6 my copy is good to go corner-to-corner, and by f/8.0 it's uuber sharp.

agreed. I have two Rokinon lenses (85 and 14mm), and both are sharper than any of my Nikon lenses. One I bought used, the other new. I wished they made lenses in all focal lengths I use. AF is something I never really cared for, so no loss there. When I shot DX I also had the 8mm - loved that one, too. I am waiting for the 24mm f1.4 to go on sale again.

I use two lenses for the purpose you mention.

AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D

AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D

Vivitar 19-35 was really good for me. It didn't survive hitting the concrete for some reason. Tokina 19-35 (if you can find one) is good, also. These are film era lenses that were very good and should do well on a D700.

See if you can hunt down a Tamron 17-35mm 2.8-4 lens. It was a pretty good lens on my D700, wish I never sold it. Can be had for about $250-300

I came across this last night.

Some Rokinon/Samyang lenses on sale.

I already have the Nikon 17-35 f/2.8 and 16-35 f/4 VR. Debating on whether I should get the Rokinon 14 f/2.8 for $290.
