Yesterday and today, I went to one of my regular birding spots for RWBB's. I noticed yesterday that this guy was sick looking so I went back today.
He sure has PLENTY of energy, because he flew around like crazy guarding the nest.
This was also my first round at using my new to me Sigma 120-300 f2.8 OS (V1) + Sigma APO 1.4x TC. So far, I am blown away by what this combo does. It's not my Canon 500/4IS, but it ZOOMS! Man, that's so nice!
Which is best? Mouth open or closed? Of course, any and all nits/crits very appreciated.
I've got the poor man's version 100-300/4 ... second time around (Nikon, then Canon). I had the 1.4x & 2.0x when I was on Nikon. The mating with the 1.4X was very nice, 2.0 started to show. No idea how the 120-300/2.8 might play with the 2.0, but the extra weight of the 120-300 keeps me (and $$$) from picking it up. BTW, how is it for hand-held ... possible or forget it? Which body are you using it on ... how's the AF speed?
This is V1 of the OS version and I find the AF quite fast even with the 1.4x. I've ordered a Sigma APO 2.0x converter to test out and I hope to achieve results like I used to get with my Canon 300/2.8 IS (v1). I hear it's quite OK @ f8 which is great.
I exclusively used this lens hand held today with my BlackRapid Sport strap to support the kit and I used it for 4 hours in a row no problem. The OS is quite good too, compared to say the Canon 300/4 IS.
I'm used to lugging around the 500/4IS so being almost 1kg lighter, this Sigma is a treat. The zoom feature is SOOOOO useful for composition I am finding that I have to re-learn my technique a little!
I prefer the first with the open beak. It has an expectancy to it.
I quite like the RWBB, although I remember a time long ago when they seemed quite rare. Then over a period of years the numbers seemed to increase greatly.
Usually I like a bit of exaggeration to better illustrate, but with this one anything more than a tiny bit of extra vignette I suspected might look ick!

Thanks you for the gif! I didn't notice it until you showed me that! Still unsure if I like the vignette or not
