Along the Sacred Way to the Ming Tombs (all the good stuff had been removed).
Locals set up tables to sell cheap-crap trinkets to visitors.
No matter how clever you THINK you are, you will never out-haggle these folks.
And do not give them more than the agreed-on price, because they give change in "old yuan" which can't be used or exchanged by foreigners. And you cannot get the sellers to return your "new Yuan."
Either pay the exact amount, or walk away.
No hagglers in the world are tougher to deal with than the Chinese farmers along the Sacred Way.

You can't get much cheaper than just about worthless, huh Charlie.
Fun trip so far. I bet you had a ball.

Thanks Tom, Ratty and MrChile.
I was a tour manager for several trips to China and other countries in eastern Asia.
Not as easy as it sounds because it was my job to make sure that everything worked the way it was supposed to. Trouble was that back then nothing in China went the way it was supposed to go:
Late flights were the norm; we were happy if the flight took place on the right freaking DAY!
Hotel desk clerks in even the finest tourist hotels knew only one way to do things, and that was THEIR way!
But I shot a brick of Kodachromes every trip (20 rolls to a brick), so I was happy .
Charlie
