One of my favorite lenses too, and it was only $60! Here's one from Spring:

What a gorgeously smooth gradient from the edge in on the petals!

Curious to those that have this lens, my copy falls apart somewhat in the very deep corners at 35mm. It's great pretty much right into the corners at longer FLs. (Talking about landscape shooting, not macro mode.) Is that consistent with what you are seeing?

Thanks,
Tim

Soemof my images from the previous page and on the A7 thread were taken at 35mm and f11, and I think they are fine, at least on my copy. I'll have to try larger apertures to see if I can produce diff results..
Here are a couple of macros using the lens...

the corners on mine are definitely worse at 35mm than longer focal lengths, but still quite usable.

here's some test shots at 35mm and infinity with default LR sharpening on the a7. note: there is a fair bit of atmospheric haze.

Thanks for the test Derek. You said you were able to adjust yours to 2.8? How ? I'd like to try...
Couple more with the A7

When I compared them this lens had sharper corners than the Zeiss 4/24-70 btw.

i removed whatever it was that stops the aperture from opening all the way at 35mm (probably an extra lever?), it took about 5 min. i've forgotten what exactly the process entailed though, will have to look it up and get back to you...

Thanks Sebboh...yours definitely looks better than mine, makes me scratch my head a little because it's great other than what I'm seeing at 35. (And honestly it's only the very deep corners at 35.)

Nice shots everyone I need to get out a bit more and shoot with it. Great comparison series also, Phillip. I'll have to test mine out to see how it performs.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but these photos are fabulous. Has anyone compared this lens to the Oly 35-70mm 3.6? If so, what's the verdict?

Not me, don't have the Oly but I'll give your question a bump

I do have this MD 35-70/3.5 Macro, mine was only $30 but has seen some fungus in the past, still seems to perform fine and agree about the attractive highlight bokeh it gives.

It's also my only zoom and I find I don't reach for it as much as I might as it's quite fiddly to use/not a great fit on the a7r, this thread definitely inspires me to dig it out a bit more.

I've never seen a hood for it - is there even one? I can fit a reversed 55mm filter on it, not that I bother, but I guess if there is a hood it is female threaded?

Very timely, testing in the pipeline at the moment!

I returned the Zuiko 35-70/3.6 for flaring issues, especially with veiling. See below.
Just received a mint, Rokkor (macro version) today and it seems the flaring is also bad, (but not veiling flare). So bad in fact that I'm convinced there must be an element out of place, see third picture, (Unless it could be an adapter issue?) However, for sharpness and clarity the Rokkor wins hands down, it really gives the Contax 35-70/3.4 a very close run for its money! However, unless I can track the flare to an adapter issue, I'll be returning this, otherwise mint copy, and trying another.

These are on my Sony A7, without lens hoods, and the adapters used are from the New VA series by Pixco, which I've been very pleased with for the price. I've used modeller's matte black enamel inside, to reduce internal reflections. I've also taped over the lens/adapter mount interface with black tape, where I've had some issues.

My standard flare test,(not for resolution!), of gable end of building, sky just out of shot on each side. (Sun behind building, flare from sky alone!)
First, the Zuiko @ 50mm F8 (worst FL for flare on all tested)

Second the Rokkor @50mm F8

Third the Rokkor at same setting closer up to wall and angled up!

Finally the Contax C/Y 35-70/3.4 @50mm F8 as my "Standard" (The diminutive Zuiko 35-70/3.5-4.5 is similar and the Zuiko 35-105/3.5-4.5 outperforms the Contax here, showing hardly any flare!)

EDIT: Since doing this test, I've been adding flocking inside the Rokkor adapter. I can't retest on the above for a few days, but certainly against a light, the flare seems much reduced. I may need to re-evaluate others now. However I'm fairly sure that what I said about the Zuiko F3.6 is correct, as I've tried others on that adapter without the same veiling flare problem.

that is definitely a light leak or adapter reflection and not lens flare.

sebboh, two eye, thanks for the confirmation, Kindai Rayqual Adapter on its way! I'll also try to acquire another F3.6 Zuiko, with less internal dust, to retest.
I'll retest once I've got the adapters and the sun comes out again.....may be some days off!
