p.2 #1 · Should I keep this 50L (sample images included)?

For what is worth, someone asked me for samples. so here is mine, all wide open:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/korboy08/sets/72157633750167792/
Your copy looks fine to me, there are some variation to it, as some reported it very soft, I discarded first 3 copies, all of them looked much worse than yours. I would suggest to go and take many shots you usually take, unless brick wall is your cup of tea...

Here are some more samples. This is the entire frame:

And here are two 100% crops. 5DmkII, ISO50, 50L @f/1.2.
Treatment (LR 4.4): Sharpening 58, 0.7 (mild) and CA 5 (purple hue).

This lens is sharp. There is no doubt in my mind, I will keep it!

OK these are the last samples. After this I'll stop I'll show originals and sharpened images. This is extreme sharpening, just for the hell of it. I usually don't sharpen images this far. Just showing you because it looks spectacular in a 50% crop.

This is all the same source image. 5DmkII, ISO400, 50L @f/1.2, 1/125s. LV focusing 10x loupe. It was windy so I took a bunch of images and this one was the best.

Entire frame:

50% crop, LR4 standard (no additonal sharpening):

50% crop, PS CS6 USM 150%, Radius 0.8:

100% crop, LR4 standard (no additonal sharpening):

100% crop, PS CS6 USM 150%, Radius 0.8:

Actually yes. After setting up my camera on a tripod and mounted my 50L @f/1.2, I must have moved the car back and forth a million times before obtaining a sharp image. This lens is useless, the DoF is just too narrow.

seeing the pics, it confirms my decision.
owning 2 different 50L for the last years, I loved the colors and bokeh, but hated the shift focus and the weak sharpness in some aperture.
in studio it was great, but I couldn't live with it outside.

when the mark II appears, I'll try again.

Hi Ben, that was just a silly joke. But I do have a cat and her name actually is Pixel. Originally it was Pixie, but I like to call her Pixel now, much more appropriate . If you like I can give it a try taking some shots of her, although I'll need to move in close on such a small subject and DoF will be extremely thin at those focal distances.

Stay good,
Ralph

Hi Gust, that is totally understandable. I want to make this lens work so badly that I'm willing to put a lot of effort in it. On a 1Dx or 5D3 they apparently work quite well so it's just a matter of time. Until then I'll just try and make the best of it on my 5D and 5D2. At least it's a sharp copy when using LV.

Stay good,
Ralph
